I dont' want to mess with any computer chips, kits, plug-ins, fuel or ignition mods, etc. on my 2006 QC SRW 4X4 LB for my HP gains, only airflow. Call me a wuss, but I only want to add say, an intake, maybe something like the Banks Ram Air, etc. and some easy exhaust mods. Let's start with the EXHAUST:

1) isn't the stock 4" exhaust pretty decent? I see lots of companies selling aftermarket 4" systems. Isn't FOUR INCHES = 4 inches?! I can see maybe deleting the cat, adding a higher flow muffler, but I don't understand the concept of replacing my stock 4" exhaust with another 4" exhaust. I don't want a 5". That being said, are their gains to be had with getting a new muffler (MBRP, etc. ) and deleting the cat or ? Is it legal to delete the cat in Washington State?

2) As for air intake, I don't want to mess with an intercooler. I figure I'll only add a cold air intake, maybe the Banks kit I mentioned.

3) what gains could I expect with a combo of #1 and #2 above?

4) Most importantly, WOULD ANY OF THESE MODS VOID MY WARRANTY?

Thanks guys!

Air filter might give you 2-5 extra hp if that , but it will give you better throttle response. As for the exhaust, yeah the stock system is acctually pretty goods to a point since that stock muffler is a little restrictive but for the stock turbo it is fine. You can change the muffler BUT REMOVING THE CAT will bring you problems on the warrenty side of things. That is dependent on your dealer whether or not they accept the cat delete. And so you know when you remove the cat is is a federal violation, states have no say in that issue.

Thanks Raychem -- wonder if I would fail emissions? Me thinks probably, but real world experience with that I DON'T have. Anybody?

So with my hair brained mods, I'd see maybe 30-50 each of hp and tq?

On my 05, I wanted it to breath a little better so I went with a Amsoil dropin fliter. The EGT does indicate its running a little cooler. Also, when taken to the dealer, they havent said anything about the filter change affecting the warrenty.

I also gutted the tube between the filter and the turbo.

Iv got an MBRP muffler on order.

Ill let you know how the two work when done.

From what I've heard, that cat only becomes restrictive if it gets clogged up. If you're not adding a lot of fueling, there's really no need to remove it. Just pick a less restrictive muffler and be done with it.

Don't expect tremendous HP gains. The point of adding air is to burn more fuel, so you need to add fuel as well if you are going to get the gains.

One air mod you didn't mention is a new cam to let the valves breathe free. A few issues ago in TDR, they actually documented a 1. 5-2. 0 increase in mpg by installing a street cam, and the engine is more responsive. It's a little pricey because of the labor (mine was $1500 installed), but the fuel savings can help offset the cost. Don't know what it does to the warranty though.

air flow mods

I just completed so very easy mods like you are talking about.

1. stock air box mod 4" water closet bend in bottom of box and heat resistant hose to draw air from bottom + amsoil drop in filter.

2. cool blue hose from air box to turbo.

3. cfm+ air horn

4. magflow muffler

5. Gauages are next.

My dealer so far has had no probelem with my mods, I do beleive I have picked up some h. p. and tork but how much I dont know, I tow my 5th wheel about 5 times a year and I just want cooler egt. I will be adding a smarty box latter for the ballance of h. p. tork. and improved mpg.

Hope this helps

Options

I just downloaded a Smarty #3 program in my '07 and added a Amsoil Nanofilter drop-in. Results: published monetary impact, normal egt's,no filterminder draw down, enormous increase in driveability and power, minimal smoke increase. It's advertised as guaranteed undetectable and hopefully I'll never need to test Marco's claim. This seems like a very cost effective option for us. :)

When my '03 was stock, one of the first mods. was an AFE, ProGuard-7 cold air intake system. I, actually, noticed a VERY small DEcrease in performance. I have since removed the AFE PG-7 a couple of times (for trips to the dealer) &, again noticed the same decrease in acceleration. I understand that the air intake sensor gets an unusual reading with the AFE & defuels, slightly. At least, that's what I've been told. Once you put a box on, that problem is taken care of.

If I had to do it over, again, I'd look into what RSeymon did to his airbox. Much cheaper & gets true, cold air into the engine.

I was told by all the dealers, in the Phoenix area, that air intake systems & aftermarket mufflers do not impact your warranty. They said that they do not like to see fuel delivery system modifications (boxes, chips, etc. ).
