My dad and I drove into work this morning with his '06 G56 w/ 65k on it. The truck ran fine on the way in. I went to use it about an hour after shutting it down, and it would start, run for about 2 seconds, and then shut itself down. Checked the oil, and changed the fuel filter, purge it, and now it won't start at all. It cranks just fine, but won't fire. CEL is on, but it won't throw any codes. Help? This is a work truck, and we need it running ASAP (no to mention to get home).

CR do not have fuel shut off solenoids, I suspect the lift pump has failed. When you say you purged the filter after changing it what do you mean?

Drained the filter bowl, then cracked the line coming off it to the CP3 until there was a good fuel flow (so the lift pump is working fine, you can hear it go).

I did some searching about this, and found posts about an ASD (auto shut down) relay? Where is it? The PDC only has fuses in it, no relays.

Almost sounds like it isn't recognizing a "smart" key. The anti-theft mechanism is stopping you from "stealing" your own truck.

I've been doing more reading, notably this post. With the grids disconnected, and a little shot of ether, it still won't fire. No smoke coming out the exhaust either.

I also talked with the dealer (we have a good one here that's treated us very well). The service tech said that if one of the injectors goes bad, it can dump all the fuel back to the rail return, and then you won't hit the 5,000psi or so rail pressure that it needs to start.

Good news is, it's still under warranty.

I dunno ... In the beginning you said it would start and run for a couple of seconds and then shut down. After tinkering with it it won't start at all, even on ether. You may now be dealing with 2 separate problems.

Update

It runs.

I disconnected the batteries for a minute, then reconnected them, and it fired right up like nothing had ever happened, and runs just fine. Think it forgot the Sentry key and then remembered once it had its brains cleared?

Anyway, time for a rail pressure gauge...

Glad to hear it's running. I think it's likely that is what happened. Did you have to crank it long after reconnecting the batteries?

Less is best.

All this Sentry key talk reminds me of my attempt to order a plain Jane ST model. Unfortunately,power seats were not available in the ST at any cost,so I had to order an SLT. The Sentry key is mandatory. :{

Nope. Fired right up as it always has.

Tell me about it. I've got the ST package (was my dad's before mine, and he couldn't get an ST on his '06), and I couldn't be happier (although cruise control might be nice at times). The only fancy thing it has is air conditioning. The windows go up when I want them to, the doors don't lock themselves when they feel like it, and I can hose down the floor if I want to.

Plain Janes.

Yeah, power seats were mandatory. I'm a big guy and power seats make a huge difference along w/power pedals. I ordered mine through Dave Smith and a neighbor bought one of the last 5. 9's from them also. DSM only had ST work trucks in reg. cabs. His came w/cruise and rubber floors. A/C was standard. He's always complaining about the manual windows, but I tell him they match his manual doors. :) I deliberately omitted a security alarm as I didn't trust that technology either.
