6.7 bad rep for cummins?

My 04. 5 was stolen recently. It will not be recovered. After much reading ... I have decided the 6. 7 coupled with the auto 6 speed and the jake (exhaust) brake is the best combo for replacement.

I have a couple of questions.

(1) When was the first build date for the 07. 5?

and along that same line of thought

(2) I prefer to buy used ... so what opinions are there on a "safe" build date after which the 07. 5's will have had at least the initial bugs worked out of them?

or

(3) If you were me, would you just bite the price bullet and go for an 08 and its updated software?

Thanks for any responses

1) I think the first build dates were Jan/Feb 07 as 5. 9's were made up through December 06.

2) Not sure about safe build date, you are getting the same vehicle no matter when it was built, just depends on the flash that was in it when new..... and of course this can be updated.

3) The 08 software is the same for 07. 5, just different p/n's... ... so you don't necessarily have to "bite the bullet" as you will be getting the same software whether you buy a 07. 5 or a 08.

What I would recommend is if you find a used truck at a Dodge/Chrysler dealer have the service dept. pull up the warranty claims history. This takes about 30 seconds and will give you a good idea for what the truck has been in for - flashes, parts replaced (if any), etc. No dealer I've talked to has objected to this as they're looking to move metal and the warranty/service records are not confidential (in my opinion)

Get the 08 x3 I love mine from what I have seen on the boards the early 07's is were 99%of the troubles were

Look at the trouble posts--big dif between 07. 5 and 08

07. 5 and 08 = same hardware, but built with different software. I agree there were more 07. 5's built with problematic software, but the nuts and bolts of the 07. 5's and 08's are the same... . so, in my mind they are the same trucks and given a warranty history from a dealer I think one should feel safe to purchase a 07. 5.

Hasn't part number on the turbo been changed? Wonder what other pieces are superceded by a new number since the early 6. 7s. It may not happen as fast with Chrysler but the Ford guys talk about Job1 Job2 Jop3 trucks. Some of them know every change from those Jobs(changes)stuff as simple as the latest is a change in the front spoiler/valance for improved fuel ecomony etc. Some even comment on what JOB trucks to stay clear of.
