Common Rail 5.9 burning oil (I think)

Common Rail 5.9 burning oil (I think)

I didn't know anything about a diesel except the 7.3 ford. I got an 07 megacab 5.9 almost a year ago. I joined this group & began to learn what it took & what it meant to be a Cummins owner. I started my overhaul today. My truck is 100% stock. I took out my silencer ring & installed my cold air intake & 3" elbow. Just that made a huge difference. Of course my husband had to test drive it first. My other parts will be here this week & next. Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who started this site & to everyone that is a member & helps others succeed. I have a video to upload but not sure how to.

Please stay with the OEM paper filter and love your engine. They flow more than enough air and are the best thing you can do for the health and longevity of your engine. I've done both on a previous truck that was chipped etc. and the aftermarket one did nothing but dust my intake and engine.

I just put on. How often is regularly. I change the air filter in my 1500 every 3 months

Can you post a picture of it? If it is an oiled type filter, they are less than ideal for a turbo diesel, especially if you are on any dirt roads. The turbo has so much suction it will pull dirt right through the filter. The factory filter and box is the best in this application.

Nice big ole truck by the way:)

Unless you’re running twin turbos and lots more air you simply cannot beat the stock filter and box. With a cheap and simple Home Depot mod it’s enough air for 500+ rwhp.

I have yet to see an aftermarket “CAI” that does a better job than stock.

If you service it like that you should be fine. The way to determine if it is working or not is to wipe the inside one of the intake bellows on the clean side of the filter. There should be NO dirt on a clean white cloth. If there is any dirt at any filter service get rid of it and go back to stock paper filter.

As you can tell, your not going to find any love for "cold air intakes" on here. The S&B intake with the paper filter and filter wrap is the only aftermarket setup I like.

I try to steer customers away from CAI but most buy trucks that already have them on. eBay is a good source for stock air boxes.

I know this is not what you want to hear being as you just installed the intake but they are less than ideal.

Sorry for the late response. The good thing about this "problem" is I can take it off & give it to our son. He will find a way to use it

Thank you. It's a paper & chicken wire filter lol

Kasey, take it off and go back to stock.

As many have stated above the stock set up really is the best option. You're putting a very expensive and reliable engine at risk otherwise.

I'm assuming you are referring to the center section of the tube seen in Eric's photo. Is the alternative to install an Airaid MIT?

No, the 90° elbow that does between that tube and the turbo. On 04.5-07’s it has a white insert that helps the air turn the 90° corner.

I refer the MIT over what Eric did since the OE tube isn’t smooth, but the MIT is a smooth constant taper.
