whats the story with the front axle? looks almost like a 4wd but no u joints or pumpkin. its interesting that the spindles appear to be from a 4wd.

please shed some light on this setup.

thanks

The first thing I noticed was the strait axle when I saw my first one. The truck I'm ordering is the QC 4X4 with the Elite bed by B&W (pic in other thread) as soon as the 325 HP version starts on the assembly line.

Why are the frame so different between my pics and these pics? See the doubler welded to the bottom and the different e-brake cable routing?

Is this a 4500 -vs- 5500?

I know a person who owns a landscape type of business and he uses Dodge trucks. He has a couple of second generation flatbed trucks that are 2WD. They have the 4WD setup in the front: staight axle minus the pumpkin, no front shaft or Xfer case, etc... It seems that it was more efficient to utilise the similar components of a 4WD to get the heavy duty 3500 capacity in a 2WD version while not "re- inventing the wheel. " It is very similar to the photos in this example.

Anyone else notice that some of these trucks have a ridiculous amount of overspray on the rear sections. I have seen 4 different C & C now, all different configs. I saw three on one lot in Maryland this weekend, the two regular cabs had a ridiculous amount of overspray, the whole top of the exhaust was black the gas tank and frame rails felt like sand paper and yet the third a quad cab truck was perfect. Then today I see a truck on a lot back here in CT. Everything on the rear of the truck had been sprayed!!!! and very poorly to boot. The top of the gas tank and the exhaust pipe have runs from the paint being so thick. Also all the ID stickers on the back of this truck were painted over, what are they trying to hide? If I had ordered one of these trucks I would be furious it looks like the stuff I haul in the dump, s. h. i. t!!! I posted in this thread because you can see what I'm talking about in the pics posted by YO HOOT.

Great pics CUMMINZ. Do you have any of the entire truck from the front or side or anything? I'm curious how a 4x2 with quasi-4x4 running gear sits.

I may be wrong, but they may do the final assy on the chassis cab on a different line (they're too long to fit the Dodge building), maybe even a Freightliner line, and that's how they paint Freightliners. Hoses, wiring, all gets painted.

I think you need to look at the frame photos again. The top of the frame is flat front to back.

My mistake I was talking about the frame being C channel :-laf

Yeah and its a mighty big "C" channel frame too. Looked at a RC/CC manual 6. 7 (the only one they had) at Hill-Kelly the other day. Very beefy, but I wonder why they use "C" channel in heavy-duty frames as opposed to box frames in "light" duty frames like a 2500. I'm sure there's a sound engineering reason why, I've just never dug around to find out. Can they safely flex easier or something?

They are building a 3500 now with C channel frame. I'll bet the furture holds a 4500-5500 on the same frame that is easy to build tougher.

C Channel works for the big trucks like Pete, KW, Volvo, and Binder and even Ford and Chevy why not stick with a good thing ;) Not to mention you can clean the rust out from inside the frame :D

I was talking to a Dodge dealer the other month and they said that they are planning on building a 4500 & 5500 in 08 or 09 only time will tell.
