My '07 (3200 miles now) developed a tapping sound at 2900 miles. It is not like the familiar rythmic clacking that diesels make but sharper and higher-pitched. It sounds like a loose valve does on a gasoline motor. I'm having the dealer look at it next week. They say it sounds normal but they're going to check the valve clearances. I would be grateful for any suggestions on what else to look for.

This is my first time, so be gentle.

Welcome aboard mate.

Checking the valves is a good idea.

You can also zap the manifold with a temperature gun and see if there any MAJOR temperature differences which might lead you to something like an injector...

mine is doing the same thing. it is quiet when cold and gets worse when it warms up. the dealer told me it was normal and to drive it.

Even though I have a 04,5 I had a simular sound after my first tank of fuel. I read that you should use some power service (Walmart). Since my second tank (Currently 48K) I've been using 16oz of power service, grey bottle and 4 oz of Marvel Mystery Oil. The sound went away short afterwards and alls been well since. I also just adjusted the valves. I didn't notice a power increase but the engine is much quieter. I would wait until the engine is broken in and has some mileage before adjusting the valves. Good luck

Dealer Adjusted 2 Valves

I took it to the dealer and they adjusted the valve lash on #2 and #5. It runs smoother now and is quieter at all operating temps, plus a low-end vibration at highway speed disappeared. Best of all the tailpipe sound is smooooth!

The tapping sound is still there and is more noticeable: due to a quieter engine perhaps? I still need to check the manifold temps.

Thanks to all for your advice.
