Fellow Rammers:

Just came from the auto show in Houston and checked out 08 F-350 and looked at brochure on F450... I wish Dodge would at least match Ford in features and equipment:

F-450:

GCVWR 33Klbs

GVWR 14. 5Klbs

Comes w/dually p/u bed

650 hp/650 ft lbs tq

Integrated trailer brake controller

Cargo bed extender folds into side of bed

Step and hand hold folds out of tailgate

There is no space under the hood of the Ford... all the filters are uptop.

Dodge 4500:

Don't know specifics on GCVWR or GVWR

305 hp/605 ft lbs tq

CC: Deler told me I could get an outfitter try to mod making a pu bed fit

Aisen 6speed ++

integrated exhaust brake

I don't know about y'all, but i don't want a flat bed or hauler body... just a regular p/u bed. I made up my mind I'm keeping my 3500 until Dodge comes thru w/ a 4500 w/ a p/u bed or by 2010 if the Ford 6. 4 has proven itself.

We'll wait and see. What are your thoughts?

I own a group of trucks... . 2 Fords, 3 Dodges and 2 larger trucks... . The 2 Fords are an F350 with the old 7. 3 with 450 K miles and its runs fine... . a great old truck... . the F550 has the 7. 3 Powerstroke and has 350K miles... The F550 is by far the worst buying decision I've ever made in a truck... . Its on engine 2, transmission 2 and who knows how many injectors... wiring to the injectors... its cost me at least 5 times to keep up than the 04 3500 dually that I have with 230K miles... . I went to trade off the F550 and there was no one to give me anything for it... so I've decided to run it until I see the Dodge 5500..... I've been in a larger truck thats made for Mexico... And because I own the F550 I was asked about and shown some stuff on the 4500 and 5500 almost a year ago... .

I'm waiting... . However if you really want a Ford I've got and F550 that might be for sale in a few months... .

Under ford. . 650 HP... definitely a typo on someones part!! :-laf

That's the "CUMMINGS" motor :D ... OK, back to your regular scheduled show. My neighbor's going to get one. He's going to trade in his 2001 Ford 7. 3.

Wiredawg, I don't know where you are coming up with these HP/Tq numbers for the phantom 4500/5500 trucks. That HP is from the Cab & Chassis (a commercial truck). The P/U numbers with the 6. 7L are closer to 360 & 650. I would hope that those would be the numbers in the 45/5500 trucks if they ever happen, or they might just as well not even bother.

Those ford sales guys dont even know what they are selling... . my boss went in to buy another truck for cutting grass, (lawn/landscape biz) and the guy tried to tell him about the new 6. 3 that was coming out in the new trucks..... at least know what your trying to sell some one.

I laughed..... hard! :-laf

Who would want a 6. 4 after the 6. 0?

They say it is a completely redesigned engine only sharing a few parts from the 6. 0, but still how can you trust what they say.

Plus there are too many firsts on this engine for them like the Piezo Actuated Common rail injection system, the twin turbos (twice as much to go wrong), emissions stuff, etc...

In his initial post, Wiredawg made an excellent point:

There's a significant market out here among those of us who tow heavy RVs as well as the horsey set towing the triple slants with living quarters and tack rooms. Ford seems to have recognized that and produced a product to serve those markets. Dodge hasn't - yet... .

Honest, the only thing they share is the head gasket... :D

I've got to agree with you, Rusty 100%. If you could only get a 6cyl. in one. I'm thinking about looking for a nice 450/550 crew cab with a V10 to do a CTD & Allison swap. I don't think the 3500 is going to hold up to my new engine.

Rusty/LEPage:

Thanks for getting my point on dodge needing to target the market like Ford in features. I opted to not buy an 07 3500 QC CC 4X4 becuse I would still be about 3K lbs over weight w/ my Travel Supreme.

LEPage: My understanding is the 4500/5500 are gonna be cab/chasis (CC); I'm concluding they are gonna keep the CC hp/tq setup as well. It'll be interesting if they change the ring/pinion to 4. 33 or 4. 56: 1.

jelag: Sorry, you're just gonna have to keep that ole tired Ferd F-550.

All: I wish Dodge would at least copy Ford w/ a D-4500 w/ comperable features.

Thanks for the comments,

Wiredawg

I figured this thread would be seeing lots of action! 16. 5k and 19. 5k gvwr compared to the 14. 5k for the 450 looks good. 26k gcwr compared to 33k for the 450 not as good. Now it needs the boost gauge and transmission temp gauge the nifty acc switches not sure about the brake controller but it needs a regular bed as an option. The built in step would be very cool. I dig the webesto style heater and exhaust brake and the 19. 5's. Whats it usually cost to put a body on the back?

Wiredawg, I stand corrected on the engine ratings. What a shame, we wait all this time for a real truck to pull our Supremes, & than they come out with a dog like that. Guess I'll just keep praying that I never have to hit a scale. Those Ferds are sweet, if only a 6 cylinder up front.

Although I haven't priced them myself, the body I would choose is the Elite series from B&W. I've heard that they run around $7K.

The elite is closer to 8k and above. The B&W is a good bed. The elite will go around 1500# empty.

I looked at flatbeds for about 5 years. The B&W has the highest quality of construction and finish of all the other brands out there.

I have a B&W on my 93. I do not have the full elite package. I have the under body boxes and a across the bed jack box. Build time is normaly around 7 weeks in the off season. Right now is the off season. They start getting busy in early March.

The first pic on this page is my bed at Sop3 this last year.

Dodge 4500=14,000 gvw, 5500=19,500 gvw, yet only 26,000 lbs gcw for either one  We know the engine is good for more and it sounds like the rear axle's will handle the task, whats the problem? My guess is the Transmission's are the weak link.

Here in Texas, you don't need a non-CDL Class A or B driver's license until GCWR hits 26,001 or over (if towed weight >10,000 lbs - Class A, <10,000 lbs or no towed load - Class B). By keeping GCWR at 26,000 lbs, it avoids some licensing difficulties.
