Is their a difference between a 94 12v and a 97 or 98 12v ??? #ad

I have found a cherry 94 auto 4x4 and thinking of buying it for a daily driver.
I know it needs a cam plate and spring , 4", DTT vb and tc but not sure what the potenial is as opposed to a 97 or 98.
any help would be appreciated. .

Thanks

All of the 12v engines are essentially the same. Get the CPL number off the engine data plate on the left front of the engine. That's the number that references all the specs. The data plate also shows the rated HP. I believe the '94 auto is rated at 160HP and 400ft/lbs. All the 12v go fast stuff fits it.

The original hp rating is somewhat correlated to the potential for power increases, with the 160 hp lowest (94-5 auto), the 94-5 5 speed (175 hp) and 96-8 auto and Cal. egr trucks (180 hp) in the middle, and the 215 hp (federal 96-8 5 speeds) much higher in potential.

What are the internal changes made. ie: cant the lower hp be upgraded by injectors or are their inj pump, cam, compression ratios different????

JNutter,
I have a '94 auto 4x4 that started life out as a 160hp motor. You can check my signature to see what all I have now, but I've been through the ropes with this motor. There were a lot of changes through the years as horsepower and governor speed increased. The main problem I have ran into is pump capability. I started out with a custom cam plate. The problem is the 160hp motors have tiny injectors. As you try to force more fuel through the small injectors, injector pump pressures go through the roof and the life of your injector pump is decreased. To combat that you need to add injectors. I went with the Diamond B 370's. This caused a terrible miss in my motor. Some people call it subtle or slight, but mine was awful. If the torque convertor locked at less than 1500 rpms, the engine would miss so bad the dash would shake. I added a governor spring kit and that all but cured the low speed miss. Two weeks ago I added high flow delivery valves and my engine runs smooth again.

If you only want 240-250 horsepower you can get by with just dropping a cam plate in. If you want more than that expect to pay $1000 for the above mentioned items. The governor on these motors are the lowest setting ever offered. I could feel my truck cutting fuel back at 2200 rpms. By 2500 rpms the acceleration had pretty much stopped.

There is plenty of performance available with these motors though. We just have to pay a few more pesos to get it. To give you an example, my best friend has a 5-speed powerstroke with a 78 hp Diablo chip and propane. We raced last week. I took off easy and just stayed beside him until he got into third so he couldn't complain about having to shift. When I punched it, I left him as if he was standing still. I might as well have been beside a Yugo.

If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Strick-9 (Chris):

Thanks for the excellent explanation
on the 160 H. P. pumps! I had heard
they were hard to "tune" but had no
idea you had to change so much!

I'm glad to hear that your truck is
running good now. The "win" you had
over the Ford PSD was great! I raced
a Ford Dually Crew Cab 460 EFI Gas
truck at the dragstrip two weeks ago
and beat him by about 2 1/2 truck
lengths! He killed me off the line
though. My reaction time was . 961!!!
TERRIBLE!! Guess I'm getting old!

Thanks again!

Going with the nozzles, delivery valves, governor spring kit and timing/Bosch power upgrade is the best money you'll ever spend and the most bang for your buck. The only catch is that they are a team that needs all the players to work together. Hesitate to do one and your engine will let you know about it.

As you have read the difference is the pump, you can get a replacement from Piers that will eliminate all of the above problems at once, you will need to explain what you are looking for as far as hp & torque. Then you can go forth with the injectors,gauges,4" exhaust, etc.

P. S. Eric M. (Stack'd-N-Jack'd) has a guy also, don't know his name #ad

I would go into the GLTDR chat room for a few nights and ask some questions they are very helpful, I would recommend that for everyone, they talk every night.

Thanks for the crash course in 12v bombing! I think Ill wait for a std shift as less ( spelled cheaper ) bombing gets more power to the ground.
thanks again.
