4bt mounting question

1/2 ton repower? updated with ??

Sorry fellas,

I wrote this post late last night, and forgot to ask my (stupid) questions...

Got a line on a rebuilt '95 12v motor, nv4500, transfercase, and accessories for $4K... . My gasser's got 280k on the ticker and it's time for a repower...

Here's what I think I need to get:

radiator

intercooler

vacuum pump

diesel fuel tank and pump

3/4 ton front springs

diesel wiring harness and gage cluster?

exhaust...

What did I miss? Will have to change out the radiator support to fit the diesel radiator?

If I want to have an auto transmission, will I have to get a different PCM? I assume the one from the donor vehicle will not work because it is for a manual trans.

Figure I could spend $7k total... Does that sound about right? Or am I being too optimistic? I plan on doing most of the work myself. Will this project be be a bolt in deal or am I going to have to do some serous cutting and welding?

I suppose the 1/2 driveshaft will not hook up to the diesel transfercase, or can I swap output shafts to match the yoke?

I'm not going to pull much with the truck, going to be a fairly stock daily driver. What do ya'll think?

I have been looking at a 2002 3/4 ton for about $20k... . I'm not sure if I want to go that route. It wouldn't be much fun... but it sure gives perspective...

You would also have to switch out the axles, because the Dana 44's from the 1/2 ton will not hold up to the weight of the 6bt.

Why not go with the 4bt? It is lighter and would be a better match in the 1/2 ton and with a few upgrades, you could make some pretty decent power. Another thing with the 4bt, is the weight. You would be able to keep your stock springs and axles. I am thinking about doing a 1/2 ton, reg cab, sb for my dad sometime with the 4bt.

Hope this helps a little,

Ben

Tractorman, is that the Engine Cort is selling? if so, that use to be mine! I traded him for my snow plow. If you need some tips, I know a guy that did the half ton swap. I also have a set of axles if needed. D80 Rear and D60 front out of my 2000. What year is your truck? I havent gotten to swapping my junk yet, as I am waiting until I have the axle perches on my new AAM axle burned on in the correct possition. I am willing to seperate with these axles for a good price as they have some rock rash and need axle seals. Only thing is, you would have to run Don Thurenfabs steering, as my steering knuckes are drilled out for Hiem Joints. Not a bad thing, but steering will cost you around 400 bucks, but well worth it. Anyway, if you got questions, let me know! I wanted to do the same swap into a beat up halfton to mess around with on the trails, but I decided against it and traded with cort.
