We have a thread going on the 24v forum for 24v 1/4 mile times. I thought I'd start one out on our new forum so we can compare all the 2nd gen trucks. I went to Stanton raceway here in Michigan yesterday and raced the beast! Ran my truck down the 1/4 four times - my best ET was 17. 372 and best MPH was 79. 41!!!! (all the times at the bottom of the msg) My race weight was 7250 lbs and I calculate that out to 273 RWHP by ET and 283 RWHP by MPH. TST says the powermax produces 275 RWHP so I'd say they are dead on!!! I figure I lost almost a full second due to shifts (started in 2nd and I'm guessing at . 25 seconds per shift). I've never run a manual down the 1/4 before and man what a handfull. For my burnouts and staging I used the heel of my right foot on the brake and my toes on the throttle - I felt like I was rubbing my tummy and patting my head. Hardest thing was getting the truck to hook up - during one run a bystander said I was spinning all the way through the 60 ft lights. The launch is really hard. What burnout and launch technique are you guys using? I'm not sure what I launched at on my first run as I was WAY too busy with everything going on. I was trying to figure out my burnout technique and then I rolled right past the staging lights as there wasn't a line or anything on the pavement and I wasn't sure where they were. Then I backed up and was frazzled. My 2nd run I launched at 1450 and spun the tires through the 60 ft lights. 3rd run was at 1200 and it bogged off of the line and was my slowest run (almost a full second slower than the fastest one). On my last run I launched at 1300 and I think that's about right. I got my burnout technique down pretty good on that run too. Spun em in the bleach box till I saw smoke and then let off the brake and stayed in the throttle until I heard tire chirp. Then I stopped and did two launches - on the first one it spun hard, on the second on it just spun slightly. I didn't have any wheel spin off of the line at all but did bog down. It seems it either spins em or bogs down if it hooks up. Two guys walked past my truck when I was in the staging lanes and laughed. After my run they came back by and said they had to apologize as my run was d. . n impressive!! #ad
I was beaming with pride!! So what are you guys running? I'm especially curious to know what other guys are running with 5 speeds!

Geesh Steve,,, does that launch technique come with an instructional video? I've been trying to figure out a technique. I'll have to print your post and tape it to my dashboard.

Steve,
I scanned your message looking for what mode your transfer case was in.

I am told that launching in 4x4 can shave a full second off the 1/4. My6... is the expert on that method.

David

I was in 2wd. My concern with running in 4 was binding up the drivetrain by the end of the 1/4. Plus I had to drive right through the water box (no room to pull around) so I needed to do a burnout to clean the tires and didn't want to do that in 4 either.

-Steve

how do you launch in 4x4 then shift to 2 wheel drive? it seems that would be bad for the tcase shifting it during WOT. I know you can ruin a tcase driving it too far on pavement it's called drivetrain wind up, it could literally explode the transfer case

As to 4WD, contact Adam (MY6EATSV8) on the 12V side. I think he is doing 12sec 1/4 miles and I know he has won at least 4 of the last 5 mud bogs he has raced in. (i. e. he is hard on the truck and I have not heard of any tx case problems yet)

I ran my truck on a "marked" 1/4mile and et ranged between 17. 4-17. 6 seconds with trap speed between 79-80. Operating weight is right at 6800.

steve what are you using for tires at the strip ? if you are using the stock street tires you are burning up some good money for nothing .

with an auto its different , but when i ran i drove around the bleach box , no burnout , and just hit it when the light went green , my reaction time was not impressive , but no wheel spin , the one time i loaded the convertor the tires just went up in smoke , my best time was a 16. 88 @ 80. 03 mph , that was at 6740 lbs . , i'm hoping to get back to the track this week , should be running low 16's this time , i hope ... i need to find some sticky tires that match the stock one and work on the 4X4 launch ...

Even worse than running stock street tires - I was running my 285/75 BFG AT KO's! I don't plan on running it again - I just wanted to see what she'd do. Seeing as how I only have my stock wheels I couldn't see swapping on another set of tires just for one day at the track. I figure I probably took 5,000 miles off of em. Oh well, it was worth it to see the looks on their faces!!! #ad
I wish I could have pulled around the bleach box but it was impossible given the setup. Now I've got to rotate my tires and adjust my rear brakes (I took some life off of them too doing the burnouts).

I just got home from the track tonight and am very happy. #ad

My best time was 16. 82 @ 84. 23 MPH. #ad

This was against one of my students in his 1972 Trans Am. He got me out of the hole and through 2nd but as soon as I was in 3rd it was over. I made 4 runs is all. I didn't get anything but final ET slips. Here are my times and ETs

1st run 17. 22 @ 80. 12 MPH
2nd run 17. 02 @ 81. 64 MPH
3rd run 16. 82 @ 84. 23 MPH
4th run 16. 98 @ 83. 97 MPH

I was leaving the line with just a little tire spin @ approx 1600 RPMs. The 3rd and best run I didn't run it up to the governer I shifted at approx 2900 RPMs. The EGTs are 1350+ right before the shift and then drop right back to 900 or so. The EGT climbs really fast after 2600 RPMs. I think it time for a bigger turbo.

The approx. time are because of the MAJOR rush that comes from getting a vehicle this heavy accelerating this fast. This is TOO COOL #ad

4 minutes, 58. 9 seconds, after a rolling start with my unbombed 12-'er---Mr Ford should now be nodding his head and saying to himself---"I thought so"

Re the 4wd thing- I don't see any cause for concern in the 1/4 mile, as far as "binding" anyway. [/b

You are already loading the t-case to the point of breaking traction at launch, that is the maximum stress you can apply.

I would be more concerned about breaking something in the trans, or maybe the input shaft with a bombed engine.
That said, yes I have launched mine in 4x4- no damage yet. Sorry to say I don't recall the effect on 1/4 mile time (think it was minimal) and this POS computer ate my file of performance history notations. #ad

Hi guys, its good to be back, I've been watching this for days and going crazy, I'm really glad to now you all are making it to a track and running well, and as far as how I run, I only wish I was in the 12's, maybe some day, the last time I ran was in 2wd, 14. 35 @ 98mph on my 35 bfg m/t's, the time before I ran in 4wd for the launch, this is what I did, go to the line and stage, rev it up to about 2500 and turn on the LPG, when the yellow lights were coming down put it to the floor,( around 3000 then), launch in second, shift to third, shift into 2wd, run the rest of the race in 2wd, the best I ran then was 14. 41@ 94. 7mph with a 1. 91 60 foot time. The last time I ran my best time in 2wd I had a 2. 3 60 foot time, thats 4/10's, plus I had an extra 250lbs in the truck that should be worth a tenth or more, so at presant I have a high 13 second possibility, exept for the fact my truck is sitting idle with no transmission. By the way I was running 15. 2 on the stock clutch without any chemicals except old #2. Sorry for the long post, guess I'm excited to be back, Adam

It actually hooked up launching at 3000 rpm!?!?!?!? Holy Cow! I couldn't get mine to hook up at a measly 1450 - of course that was in 2wd. Sounds awfully hard on the drivetrain - maybe why your sitting transmissionless?

-Steve

Yep, I'm sure its not the best for anything but the way I look at it is if I was hooked to a big rig in a ditch, and was trying to pull him out onto a road in 4wd, how much more stress is that? Anyway I broke 5th gear, not any of the prior gears, oh well its still cheaper than my boat was. lol

hi, that combo really easy to duplucate, 4" eshaust, K/N, and the pump, camplate modified to within 1/16th from the front of the housing, afc spring out and the housing slid all the way forward, and the throttle stop all the way in, or shortened, it revs all the way to 3100 without a hint of dropping fuel until it hits the governer like a brick wall, any way, I would launch in 2nd at around 2000 trying not to slip the clutch to much or bog the motor, I was running 15. 2 @ 88 mph. and riht around 300hp at the rear tires. hope this helps, Adam

Hey Adam nice to see your back!! Made some mods to the pump while I was at MM thanks to the help of Piers. We changed the govener springs and cam plate again. I seem to have a tool box full of them if anyone needs one. The pump now starts pulling back fuel at 3200 but you can't seem to tell. I seem to be at the point of no more for the stock clutch. If you are interested in the pump mods let me know I can fix you up. Hope to see you Wednesday.
