The following is a copy of an E-Mail I sent to Mr. Bob's distributing:

Dear Sirs:

_

I would like to take issue with an advertisement for Mr. Bob's Distributing I saw in the most recent issue of the Turbo Diesel Register. It advertises an Odyssey battery (model PC1700) as having "1700 Cold Cranking Amps. " Additionally this ad suggests replacing both batteries in a diesel pickup with a single battery of this model.

_

These claims are simply untrue.

_

From Odyssey's own literature, the PC1700 battery produces 840 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA).

_

The industry-standard "CCA" rating is a measure of how many amps a battery can discharge for 30 seconds at 0 degrees Fahrenheit while maintaining at least 7. 2 volts.

The_"1700-amp" rating of this Odyssey battery is a measure of _how many amps it can discharge for 5 seconds at 77 degrees Fahrenheit while maintaining at least 7. 2 volts.

The outcomes of these two tests are not comparable by any standard.

_

As for replacing two batteries with a single PC1700: My pickup come from the factory with two 750 CCA batteries wired in parallel. That's 1500 CCA (not counting any voltage loss due to the connectors and cable).

_

I would hardly expect that 840 CCA is a viable replacement for 1500 CCA.

_

I do not represent the Turbo Diesel Register nor am I speaking on their behalf. I am just a member. As such I generally hold contributers and advertisers in high regard. _However, I do expect honesty - even in a competative marketplace. Advertisers' claims must be supportable in one way or another. This is simply not the case with the ad in question. It's just not right to mislead people this way.

_

I look forward to your response.

_

Sincerely,

Kyle Hager

I have always tried to upgrade batteries anytime I replace them. I looked at the Odessey and saw the same problem as you found with a lower CCA rating. I have been waiting for the Optima Group 31 battery to be introduced. This is a deep cycle (yellow top) battery.

Cold Cranking Amps: 1125

Reserve Capacity: 200 minutes

Size: 12 7/8 x 6 7/8 x 9 7/16

It might require a little surgery on the battery tray but having 2250 CCA will make it worthwhile. I have searched the WEB about every month and have started to see more info about this battery. I just hope it will be available soon.

Optima used to make a fairly large yellow-top (group 75?) that had serious potential. As I recall it had about 1400 CCA but I can't remember for sure.

I think they stopped making them - didn't sell too well because their reserve capacity wasn't that great compared with other deep-cycle / RV batteries.

Kyle: Your observations on the CCA ratings are correct. But, in real world use... there seems to be at least a handful of folks on the TDR running one Odyssey battery in their Dodge/Cummins trucks.

I've been running one red top Optima in my '91 Dodge for years, now. They work great! $99. 99 at Costco. The nice thing about them is that they don't seem to just "die" all of a sudden. They fade away. The truck seems to start a little slower. When this starts to happen I buy a new one and keep it in the truck for when the old one finally gives up the ghost. The Optima's also seem to last me about twice as long. By the way, I saw the new group 31's at the SEMA Show. They're going to be about $200. 00 per the rep. Joe F. (Buffalo).

The costco one's are only rated @ 750 for the red tops. There is a 800 amp red top as well

This thread got me hunting around the internet. The Odyssey PC2150 looks like one big HD battery. It is a group 31 with 1090 CCA at 0 deg F for 30 secs, over 2100 CCA for the first 5 seconds. It weights almost 80lbs. :--)

I found it for $240.

From the Optima website, it's group 31 (D31A model) yellow top provides 900 CCA at 0 deg. F for 30 seconds. Of course if you do some research there is a lot more to a battery than just looking at the CCA. The Spiral Cell Optimas are a great technology and offer a lot of advantages. I found it's price just under $200.

Does anyone have any experience with the EnerSys / Hawker Odyssey batteries? They claim to be rugged military grade construction and the specs (full specs are in a pdf here) where they compare directly to the Optima leaves the Optima in the dust.

They are both pretty close in size, anyone put one in the stock battery tray?

we run dual deka batteries in all our buses, and that is 150 buses. they last and come highly rated by many. i have yet dropped one in the dodge .

www.dekabatteries.com. Find a distributor from their site, buy one or two of their group 31 1260cca at 32*, 1175cca at 0* and be done with it. Price is around $80. Find a group 31 rated that high for that price, I'll give you mine, not gonna happen. I believe the part number is like 1260PMF. I have one in my 89 and 91, love them. I laugh when I see one of those sissy optimas in a CTD Ram, pop my hood and show them a real truck battery:D.
