I was wondering the other day (that's why my head hurt) if a 1 ton was a one ton was a one ton? Is the suspension and drivetrain on a gasser 1 ton the same as a diesel? Same question for a 3/4. If I got a 3/4 ton gasser, is it ready to take a CTD, or does the suspension need beefed up?

Is a one ton- - - -

Pretty much. There are some frame differences in the crews compared to the extended cab and compared to the regular cab. Look at the depth of the frame at the area between the cab and bed on your 90 compared to the 93. After reading a post on lengthening the frame for a mod, I looked at my 89 regular cab and it is a six inch depth of frame. The 85 crew is 7 inches and the extend cab 93 is 8 inches. I can't see any differences in the front suspension or the spring set up. There may be someone who can specify a difference but it isn't visible. There are srw one tons and cab and chassis one tons and dually one tons but the differences there are relative to the width of the back axle. A big block gasser weighs right close to the same thing as the Cummins and can put similar flex on the frames. I believe you will find that some of the earlier one tons had a dana 60 rather than the 70.

On the crew mentioned in this thread, that is a pretty good price for a running crew. I have seen them for double that and for a tad less but not in very good shape.

I looked up the area code, it's in California. I saw this one on a road trip and wondered if it would be in shape enough to convert. I've yet to go past with the guy home, and his dogs don't want me to get a close look.

wow... I think it would be totally sweet to do an old Power Wagon crew cab conversion like that one. It'd take a lot of fabrication and precision welding, but man what a rig that'd be. Those older ones are no more a brick than our 1st gens, eh?

This is actually my first post here so let me start by saying hello. :D

I actually joined a week or so ago just because I am thinking of building a cummins crewcab conversion. Been reading through the forums doing research ever since. I actually saw that add in the autotrader during my daily search for potential project trucks. It's about 2-hours away from me, near San Diego, Ca. I didn't consider it though because it's 2WD and I want a 4WD.

It's not a first gen. but here is another cool truck for someone that wants a crew but doesn't have the time/tools/whatever to build it. Just found it this morning during my usual eBay search.

My son is based in San Diego and he sent me the autotrader link. I understood it wasn't far from where he is. He may be able to get away to lok at it closer if anybody is interested.

A lat 60's Power Wagon body on a later model CTD framw would definitely be a cool project. Blowing the doors off a PS 6. 0 with what looks like a 40 year old truck would really be great.

I wish it was closer and had more/better pics, I'd buy it. Thats an interesting crew cab on ebay. Funny how no where in the ad does it mention the conversion process, trying to make it sound 'rare', like its was a factory option, ebay lol  .

Howdy Earl - welcome to the funny farm! Oo.

If you're wanting to do a crew cab project you have definitely found the right place to start. There are a bunch of us doing crewcab conversions, so just about everything you can think of has probably already been thought of - ask away! We love to talk about all of our silly plans... . ;)

Welcome Bud, hold on tight. Your gonna love this place. It's gonna be one wild ride.

As for frame thicknesses my W250 is a 6" and the crew is a 7".

Quote "I didn't consider it though because it's 2WD and I want a 4WD". Sorry to tell you this bud, but if you are wanting a long box ie dually, your gonna have to make your own as they didn't make a crew long box in 4WD. You can get a shorty 4WD, but not long.

If I can be of any assistance, let me know.

Robert

Thanks for the welcome Oo.

I know that I'll be tearing into it to convert one to diesel, and considered doing the 4wd conversion at the same time, but if it can be avoided I'd like to save myself a little time. I don't necessarily need a longbed, but I do need something that I can get going fairly quickly. I don't have much room at my house so I'll be doing the work at a friends, and I don't want to be taking up his yard for months.

Here's a couple more for your viewing pleasure.

Lonbed crewcab already converted to 4wd

'92 W250 that I missed out on because I didn't have the money on Monday when I first saw it.

and a nice crewcab shortbed 4wd that didn't sell. I'm currently in contact with this guy and will probably make him an offer tonight. (So don't go trying to steal it away from me :D :-laf )

Anyway, I currently have nothing but a dream and a little $$$ so keep posting up those leads.

Thanks,

Donald

That $800 truck looks like it was rode HARD (swayback). I liked that white crew though. I think if anything disasterous happens to my truck, I'll put the running gear into my 71.

Crew project core.

There is a crew in Hart county Georgia that is 900 dollars. Short bed (gasser of course) manual transmission, needs a drives window and panel on inside. It is an 82 or 83 and has four headlights. Twd, red and white. Its a start. It runs. I like the location of the fuse pannel on this truck.

I don't think that I have seen a dually in a crew that wasn't a conversion. For those considering this project, it is one of the easier projects since all the connections can be had from a donor truck which you will need anyway for the engine. I think I have seen the comment that the holes are already in the frame for connecting the fwd front axle.

Some of us are trying for a bit more than "crew" and that brings on more work.

I paid 600 each for mine. They are one ton but are srw. Both ex military, very plain. Anyone need a gas engine (4bbl) and transmission for whatever. Got two of them. Swap for anything worth a hoot.

There are a few old power wagon (like the old white one) crew cabs for sale here in fairfield ia. I know they are for sale too. A couple are 4X4, old forestry trucks. There is a Power Wagon collector, parts guy here in town. Heck, there is even a PW ralley here every summer.

James are they big blocks? Yeah right.

Quote "I currently have nothing but a dream and a little $$$". No worrys dude. If you look into the archives about a year back you will find many threads on crew cabs by me. I irratated the heck out of these kind guys on here about this case and that possibility. All it was was a dream at that time and I had little $$$. A possibility that I was considering and needed info on. One month ago I found my truck exactly as I was going to make it at a price that I could afford. It needs little things, but that can be done. Keep your eyes peeled, and your dreams alive. As I learned, be patient, it exists, you just gotta find it.
