Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Truck Not Reliable

Just installed a #10 fuel plate in my '94, and now I'm getting some noise from the transmission when I get on the throttle. It happens if I go full throttle below 2000 rpm. Below 1500 rpm its pretty pronounced, between 1500 and 2000 its more subdued and above 2000 rpm its gone. Seems to happen in any gear although its hard to tell in the lower gears because I go through those gears so fast. It's definitely there in 4th and 5th gear though. Any ideas? Should I worry or is this normal when you up the power?

I suppose the best way to describe it is like a grinding/hissing sound. Sort of like that griding sound a manual transmission will make when you're moving in gear close to idle, except higher frequency, and quieter.

Ryan,

Mine does it, too. I've been told it's normal for the NV4500 because the gears are straight cut. Mines been doing it now for around 100K miles and it ain't broke yet. ;)

Mine did that to and then one day while pulling a hill the clutch blew out. That was a Rally Clutch from South Bend Clutch only had 40,000 miles on the clutch. They stood behind it and gave me credit towards a 13" Con OFE. This clutch is quiet and smooth no noise what so ever.

Has anyone ever heard a noise from the NV4500 during heavy acceration, usually in the upper RPM range?

It's sort of like a whine or a drone.

I read about that on the South Bend website, and I was wondering if thats what mine was doing. Did the noise get any worse or did it start showing any other symptoms before the clutch blew? I'm thinking for now I'm just going to run it and see if it gets any worse, although I suppose I should be prepared to replace the clutch if I plan on doing any serious towing.

Surprisingly the clutch hasn't shown any signs of slipping so far, although I haven't had a chance to tow with it yet. I have gotten on it hard going up some steep hills (accelerated from 60 to 85 in 5th going up a 7% grade yesterday :D ) and no slipping so far. This is with an oil leak out the rear main seal too.

This might not be the same rattling, but when I push hard in 4th and pass 1900rpm the transmission rattles like you can't imagine. That also happens to be the peak torque rpm and is fairly normal. It is loud enough that it might cause you concern but don't worry about it. Been running that level of torque for the 100k or so.

No but the noise was much worse when pulling a load we got a 10,000 lbs,. camper.

it's "normal", but it's not "good"... I've always stuffed a bunch of rags under the shift boot between the transmission and body to keep the noise down...

if you're getting a lot of rattling, you need to be easier on the throttle or downshift
