Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 6 Speed Problem

Well, I have been holding off on the engine upgrades as I am a poor college student and wanted to save my warranty for that just-in-case thing. But I rolled past the 100,000 mark last friday and am ready to throw a little extra power at her. I am contemplating a box such as the edge comp and a set of injectors maybe the 275's just because of the price. My biggest concern is that I don't want to be going too far too soon. I already put a bhaf on and had the exhaust straight piped. I want more power but do not want to be messing with a bigger exhaust or different turbos etc. I love my pac brake and pretty much everything else so just a simple injector box combo is what I am looking at. I do a varied mix of empy loaded and pulling and want to have a setup that is versatile. I have been reading alot on here and am very interested in knowing how guys with the edge comp and 275's are faring. I drive an average of about 500 miles a week so the 275's and being able to just turn the box off and cruise easy has really appealed to me. Let me know what you think or what has proven good to those in similar setups.

Thanks

Jon

Alright!! the bombin bug is traveling to someone else! Cowboy Medic. I have 275's and they are a great little injector. The Bosch ones new can be picked up for about $300 new and shipped to your door. My mileage actually went up an average of about 1. 5 mpg and the extra ponies are great. As for the comp, I dont have one so I cant tell ya but there sure are a lot of guys liking theirs that are on the board here. Couldnt tell from your sig or not if you have a 5 or 6 speed but with the upgraded injectors and comp box you will almost certainly be looking at a new clutch. If you dont want to do a clutch an EZ might be more up your alley. I am sure someone will chime in here that has a manual transmission and can tell you for certain what you will have to do in that department.

I agree with JRandol. I run an EZ alone w/ 6 spd. The stock clutch holds fine and there is plenty of power in the 1400 to 2000 rpm range where the EZ adjusts the timing. This is enough for me to pull 10 to 12k trailers in the mountains. Cost is very reasonable for the improvement and install is a snap.

I don't match what you want, but...

I am running a EZ with stock injectors so far. This is proving to be a wonderful setup. The extra power is great and no EGT issues even when loaded with 14,000# in tow. :D

I have been on this board for quite some time. Most everyone here says that you can run the comp without hooking up the pump wire and it will produce the same as the EZ... this might give you time to save for upgrading the clutch if you want more power than the EZ. I recommend you talk to Arron at Edge before you buy. He knows his stuff and we have corresponded quite a bit. There are several vendors on here to get Edge boxes from if that is what you want. Do you homework for prices... it is worth it. ;)

I have been thinking that I would go with some DDI injectors (Diesel Dynamics Stage 1 60 HP) when my VP44 gives up. Oo. I think that I can run these and the EZ without a turbo upgrade, but it will be close on EGTs. :eek: :-{}

In 99 the trucks still had the 5spd clutch in the 6spds if that is what he has, so his clutch should hold some extra hp depending on how he has driven it and will drive it with the extra power being that he does have 100k on it already. I run a comp and dd2s nothing has hurt or helped my mpg, 275's ez, comp dd2;s. My truck is just strange I can still get in the 18's mpg warm weather emtpy never better only worse in the winter or "playing" with it. I can pull with my set up on 3x3 any more is just for play emtpy. But I am going to try a hx40 so I can use above 3 on the box when towing. Not that it is needed but more fun towing that much stronger.

Good luck

Have fun

Craig

Yep mine is a 5sp and the clutch has already been replaced. Don't remember the brand but my brother did it for me at the truck stop he works at and he told me I would never have to worry about it again. I figure I will try and hold him to it and if it does slip then I will be going for a South Bend. I have pulled some very heavy loads and really figured the time I took 23,000 lbs across the bighorns was the biggest test I would ever give it, but who knows what the future holds. I did learn the value of my Pacbrake though and I would never own another one of these trucks without an exhaust brake on it. Thanks for the replies so far and keep the ideas flowing, More background on why you made your choices and whether your purchase met your expectations would be great.

Thanks Jon

Power upgrades. Cowboy Medic I have a simple suggestion for you, first a box that does tap the pump wire. These are much more fun and can be shut off in the cab unlike an EZ. If you put an EZ and Injectors your EGT's will probably be too high to tow at all with both installed. As far as the injectors go put in whatever you want but remember building it right the first time saves $$$. I tow consistently with DDII's and have no problems just leave the box off. That is where the advantage to boxes like the PM3, JVD, and FMS are priceless. They can be shut down completely. Just my $. 02. P. S. go with DDII's they are a lot of fun and without box haven't hurt my clutch yet. (Stock with 78k. ) Dshawhan
