100% BioDiesel and White Smoke at Idle

I'm curious as to why Biodiesel {at least the stuff i'm running from a homebrew guy} smokes heavily white when warm at idle,and belches at low RPM when letting the clutch out?Does anyone else have this problem?I hate to put any "Biodiesel" stickers on my truck then have people think it's a sham because it's clouding the intersection with white smoke. It got progressively worse with the more percentage of Bio I used too... so I know it's not engine related.

I have been running quality B100 for the whole summer and the only white smoke I will see is for maybe 2 seconds at start up. Under accleration its nice and black if I want it to be.



Have you checked your oil latly? Make sure your not making oil with a bad injector.

well. . possible maybe since 2 injectors are seeping fuel at the head. . could this be it?

Any chance your timing has slipped? That will contribute to white smoke when cold. As lethal injection says, it should really only smoke for a minute or so at cold idle, but should clear up immediately if you're driving it.

What injectors are you running? I'm experiencing the same thing as you, pretty much, though I'm running B80. I'm thinking its my 370's due to the spray angle and the fact that bio-D is a bit thicker than dino-D.

JGK:Stock ones as far as I know. . I've had the truck since Oct 1st and the previous owner didn't know anything about performance . . so go figure.

Well, if that's true, that sort of shoots a hole in my theory. But I'll nurse it along until I get a chance to change to some different injectors to see what affect that has.



I'm still of the mind that since bio-D is a bit thicker than dino-D, the fuel will not atomize correctly at idle in the 12-valves and will smoke a bit. Then, when you take off, it burns out with a puff then clears up. Also, I still think my 370's contribute to the problem.



A friend has a '98 auto 12v with a set of Don M's (F1 Diesel) injectors and is otherwise set up very similar to my truck. His will haze at idle when in gear but stays pretty clear in park. It doesn't puff quite as bad at take-off either. So that's why I'm still thinking injectors. One if these days we may swap injectors just to see what performance difference there is. I'll watch the idle haze and take-off puff as well if we do that.

JGK:I hate to keep cutting your theorys up lol. . but the pure soybean oil i sometimes bought from Costco before i had a hookup on Bio... was 3 times as thick and didn't make ANY smoke at idle or driving. . it could just be a bad injector. . i wish to find out soon.

just for the heck of it go nd check that your fittings for the transfer tubes are not loose. Mine smoked white for a while, I noticed that three of my transfer tubes were loose. Tightened them up and problem seems corrected. worth a shot . .
