ARB air locker? Has someone heard something there as well? I've heard rumors of the detroit coming out. I ran an old chevy with a detroit in the rear as a ranch truck for a while... the detroit did great. I've never been nor will ever be a fan of a detroit out on a daily street driven truck though... but an ARB air locker will have me drooling. One for the front would be awesome as well!

i can understand wanting an ARB for the rear, but why a detroit? the rear has always locked up for me when i want it to or not, just like a detroit. am i missing something?

I think the power wagon has the same front as our trucks. I looked at one in a parking lot and noticed the way it was installed into the axle. I think it would have to be custom fit to get it to work.

GW,

Maybe I need a trining class , I can hardly ever get the rear to lock up

I was at a truck show yesterday and talked with the ARB rep. He informed me they just got the green light to produce an air locker for the 11. 5 AAM. I asked him for a timeline and he said they make it in Austrailia, then bring it to the States for testing. That is about 6 months. After that, it is about 6 months until production units are available. Bad news is it's a year out. The good news is I asked him about a front locker and he said that if ARB is making a rear locker, they will also be producing a front locker... ... eventually.

I was under the impression that all the R+D was done in Australia and shipped to US to buy, But what ever... .

I've had Detroit's in 3 different vehicles and like how maintainence free they are. And when you need them locked, it definitely locks. ARB's are all or nothing, which can lead to quirking handling even on the most severe trails, the Detroit allows a little slip when needed. I've also seen ARB's fail to lock because of various problems, leaks in hoses, failed air pump, frozen lines, mechanical damage, etc. Detroits are fine on the street, once you get use to their quirks, I drive mine through all types of conditions, snow, ice, mud, you name it.

I guess I envision myself using it to get out of certain situations. Detroits are noisy, they tear up tires, if tires are a little off in dia. they go back and forth . Bottom line they all have their problems.

I fully agree. Modern Detroit's aren't quite as noisy as they were in the old days, but they will tear up tires if the driver powers around corners often, you have to adjust your driving style slightly. My wife drives a Detroit equiped Range Rover on a daily basis without complaints.

It comes down to picking which you want and learning how to properly use it.

It's good to hear that ARB is working on getting lockers out for our axles. I've read that the Elockers for the power wagon will not work... to many differences. As far as "customizing" the lockers to work... I understand that to ba a task not worth while. One of the other cummins owners in town here has tried and tried to get a definitive answer on making the Elockers work and has gotten nowhere other than being told it's a no go.

I'm looking forward to an ARB for the front though... that would be nice. Also, I thought that a lot of the ARB's functioned as a limited slip in the rears? Am I wrong on this? Maybe the one they're working on for our 11. 5's will be a limited slip with the option to lock.

One last thing on the detroits... how noisy are they these days? That one I had a while back certainly let you know it was back there.

ARB's are completely open when disengaged or locked like a spool when engaged.

The new detroits are pretty quiet. With an auto transmission you'll rarely hear them at all. They don't click around corners and just give the occasional loud bang when you completely forget it's back there. :)

The older one I have in a 14 bolt GM axle is pretty noisy on turns and does bang ocasionally, but has gotten better as it wears in. The newer model I have in the Rover has improved ramps and sprags, and has never banged. If you turn the radio off and roll the window down you can here the slight click-click on turns.

I driven trucks with Detroits. TJ on 35s, Chevy 1 ton on 37 Boggers, my truck. I've never heard them make much noise. Once in a while it will click or pop, but not often at all.

The only think that's annoying is when you need to power into a turn. If I have a bit of weight in the back of the truck, it's not bad, but empty if "shudders" the truck a bit.

I almost put an ARB. I run them in my Jeep. But Detroit was $550, the ARB was $800 and I didn't feel like wiring/plumbing up all the stuff.
