Any one tore into one and or repaired their own? Curious to how it functions and why maybe certain gear oils have a affect on the liminted slip?

Here is something similar to your rearend, you do not have a limited slip ... ... ... ... ... click here

Change the ujoints while you have the differential torn apart :D

Limited Slip in reverse?

JHardwick,

Thank you for the discriptive article on thr Thorsen differential. . One question though: Does this distribute the torque in reverse, or only when going forward?

I think it works both ways.

Yes, both ways...

And regardless of what people want to believe, it is still a LSD with clutches... they are simply called "shoes"... the torque simply forces the shoes together to create the LSD effect.

I will say two things... first, mine was hung up and useless for over 90k... took towing a VERY large load to "break" it free. I also think that their effectiveness is dependant of the oil... the slipperier the oil, the less effective (regardless of what DCX states)...

I think the opposite can occur also from some posts I've found in history. Found a number of them with comments of shudder AFTER a fliud change and cured by using another brand fliud or a liminted slip additive which should NOT be needed. I'm NOT tearing mine apart just trying to find someone thats had one apart and knows how it works first hand.

The dodge FSM has a very good write up on the trac rite... might try there??

You can get the FSM online...

2. 5 Comparison with other types of differentials

Other means are also known for modifying the operative connection between drive axles to provide for the transfer of additional torque to the drive axles collectively. For example, many limited-slip differentials provide for preloading friction clutches to oppose the transfer of torque between drive axles. This frictional pre-load represents a particular minimum magnitude of resistance which must be overcome to permit any relative rotation between drive axles which may interfere with the operation of anti-lock braking systems. Also, since frictional forces are continually active to resist differentiation, the friction clutches tend to wear, resulting in a deterioration of intended differential performance.

In contrast to the limited-slip's continuous magnitude of frictional resistance to differentiation, the

torque biasing characteristic of the Torsen differential provides for a maximum ratio of torque

distributions between drive axles. For instance, as the amount ... ... ... . yadda yadda yadda
