ok, so my truck has never got great gas mileage, i've had it for about a year now, and with no mods, it got about 15 unloaded. now before i put the spring kit and boost elbow i was getting 13, after install i just logged about 11!! with diesel at $2. 65, this won't do. I've recently adjusted the valves and the fuel filter is fairly new, I use power service fuel additive at every fill up and drain the fuel filter regularly. The only thing I can come up with is the timing may have slipped. It has not been adjusted by the previous owner to my knowledge. should I move it up to about 15. 5? never done timing on a diesel before... this fuel cost is making me broke (I a full time student at Cal Poly) and I need some help! thanks

It sounds to me like your timing has slipped. I would try to find a TDR memeber in your area that can help you set it where it should be. (16)

thats what i figured, I am moving home june 12th, anyone in the Oakdale, CA area that will help, I have 40'x80' shop with uncountable tools between me and my dad. never done timing, would attempt it by myself, but would love some expertise...

Timing you do need some special tools to do. Snap-on has a nice set. It does run about $250 if I remember right. (Had mine for 2 years now)

one of my best friend's dad owns a diesel shop, so I might be able to get one there, I don't know if I can justify the expense, although I love tools.

I love tools too! Check out my readers rigs gallery for my Tool box pics. I need to get some better ones... I'm workin on it!

I have been down to 12 mpg myself all winter. I've done everything I can think of except timing. After I adjusted my valves 4 weeks ago I have been getting 16 mpg. Still not what it should be compared to everyone else on here, but I have seen quite a few other posts on here with unexplainable bad mileage. Hope I can figure mine out one of these days. good luck and let us know what you come up with.

check with Brandon, he is now the snap on dealer, used to operate 5 min oil change on Oakdale road in Modesto. rv pilot

I don't know if this will get you all the way back to where you were, but you may also check to see if your calipers are sticking. My right front one was so tight I couldn't hardly spin the wheel by hand. I replaced them (and the warped rotor) and I did notice a definite gain in mpg's. Just something else to check :D . That's what makes it fun!

funny you should mention that one of them was sticking a while back and I replaced it. I also found out while I was under there that my rotors are shot and so is my steering box, isn't it great :)

I am having the same problems... Are your EGT's out of control? I finally installed my probe pre-turbo, and I can peg 1500°++ in a matter of ~4 seconds when in 6th gear. . I don't think my timing has slipped, but I would like to try to figure out where to begin looking. . my calipers don't stick, so that is out of the question... Any other ideas??

my egt's aren't bad, I took them to 1300 today going 95mph on the freeway, but not for long, do you have a boost gauge? i pegged my 35lb gauge today, if you aren't getting sufficient boost, you will get higher egt's. what kind of intake are you using?

If your turbo is stock and you're pegging it at 35#, you may be making more boost beyond what you are seeing. If your turbo is stock, 35# is about the max you should run before getting beyond the capability and capacity of the stock turbo. As for mileage, is you transmission slipping with your mods? Is the TC locking up?

budctdca__!

Notice that you have a "97", and also notice in your profile that a KDP not listed__ as being done. has it been done?? Better get it done ASAP.

Oh yeah... I have a boost gauge... it read 51 PSI when the stock turbo grenaded... I am now seeing 44-46 lbs on my PDR HX40-16. . I am using the AFE MegaCannon for an intake. . I still don't know what the deal is though... Maybe I need another turbo to bolt on with the 40??

While you are at it, setting the timing, etc. , check the oveflow valve spring. Have similar truck and can get your mpg's towing wife's wigwam, 14k empty.
