So, Im in WalMart the other day and spot a 115v compressor that's only a little larger than a loaf of bread (tank was 2 gal. or so)for about $100. , didn't find the hp listing, but I did find a load of 2. 7 amps listed.

Also found a 300 amp inverter with a peak load capacity of 500 amps for about $40. .

I'm thinking that this could be the solution to the on board air need a lot of us have. Install the compressor in a tool box, run 12v cables back to the inverter and install some type of switch so it can't run when the engine is off, depleating the batteries.

Comments?

Same I idea I had Ronnie. I think adding a storage tank would help to give more capacity before the pump cuts in and also allow you to drive some big fat air horns #ad
The converter could also be used to run a blender #ad
The pump is air cooled so needs not to be confined in too small of an air space.

You need to be careful adding a larger tank to an air compressor. The compressor size is matched to the tank so that the compressor doesn't run for a long period of time to fill the tank, thus overheating the compressor pump. Most good compressors have a duty cycle which is the percent of time the pump can operate without overheating, something else to look at before buying a compressor.

Ronnie, you might want to go back and check that inverter to make sure it said 300 amps and not 300 watts. I checked the Triplite web site and 300 watts for about $80. 00 so to get a 300 amp one would be large dollars I think. Pete

Moparguy,

I'm bet'n the farm it was a 300 watt inverter. I looked at 100A inverter for the house as a back-up supply till the generator kicked in... It was around $2,500. I can't imagine what a 300A inverter would go for.

Since I just finished installing a generator transfer switch in our house... I took a crash course on what is required to start motors. A 60W light draws 60 watts(. 5A) constant. A 60W motor generally pulls twice as much for starting (120W (1A)). Keep in mind, current draw from motors also vary depending upon load.

For this application, you would need about a 600W MINIMUM inverter to power that unit. 2. 7A (324 Watts) is based on "running", not start-up req's. As a rule of thumb, estimate an extra 75%-100% capacity for starting.

Pete, you're correct, that's 300 watts. 300 amps would be a big boy. We're talking baby's here.

So sorry.

Deezal Man, thanks for the reminder, looks like my low dollar solution may need a second look.

You are on the right track. To find the wattage required to run the compressor, multiply volts time amps. The starting load will be much higher so don't forget that. I have a similar compressor but haven't tried to run it on an inverter but will now. bg
