I am new to this site and have seen people post 16-20 mpg with different rears and towing I have one question----- Since new i have averaged about 12-14 mpg with 3. 54 rear with auto trans I do alot of city driving with no towing or hauling does this mileage sound normal given the city driving? does anyone else do stop and go city driving and have better fuel mileage??????? i get 340-360 miles per tank Thanks

I hav a 96 4x4 auto with 285/75/16 tires (speedo about 2 mph slow) and 4. 10 rear. In daily driving mode, the truck usually weighs about 8000 lbs with a shell. I get the same milage as you do during 100% city driving (uncorrected for speedo error). Around 16-18 on the open road at 70-75 mph (8400 lbs). Best ever was 20. 2.

I have a 96 4X4 automatic. The best I can get is just under 15 MPG. Gonna' try a TST kit, bump the injector timing a bit and adjust the valves. If I can't get 20 MPG, I'm gonna' get another truck.

I think we all need to push up the mileage as much as we can. It is projected diesel will be $2. 00 by Jan 2001 here in Florida. Everyone will be running to the farm diesel tanks.

My last was 18. 75 corrected with a mix of city and hwy miles. I hope this helps, from what I understand you are a little low though.

That DO sound a little low. I average 19. 8mpg, regular cab, with a shell. I think I lose a little mileage because of the Bridgestone Duellers the previous owned installed. But they are too new to pull off, I'll wear 'em out first.

Sounds low to me I get 520 miles to a tank
city driving, in a 97 ext. cab 4x4 with 3. 54
automatic. Try easing off of the accelerator
when you take off from the stoplights.

DOGMAN that is normal driving not beating on it trying to figure out if i have a timing issue or some other problem getting ready to install torque plate but dont want to do mods if there is a problem

See signature... I average between 16-18mpg... usually closer to 18 with mixed highway/city. I also tend to be a bit heavy on the gas in town... when I run lots of city or haul construction supplies I am right at 16. 5... I average at least 480 miles per tank and never take more than 31 gallons... good luck!

I must be lucky. 21 mpg city. 25 mpg highway. Size does matter. So does weight.

First things first like consider what makes horsepower and that is fuel & air. Next comes what gets in the way of power and what can be done about it. Air must like fuel flow thru the power plant. Boost seems to me should be starting at about 5 and peak at about 25, air filter must be clean to achieve max efficiency. Then there is the exhaust that can develope problems like constapated cat or blockage in the muffler. These are cheap fixes like take the cat off for inspection and maybe gut it before reinstalling. While your there how about the muffler. Milage will be better not worse. Stephen's won ton dually in Sanger CA.

REDNUT, I would suggest you do air flow mods first to increase mileage.
A K&N air filter and a complete 4" exhaust will support all future mods and in the mean time improve your efficiency, power, response, and milage.

Adding fuel at this point will decrease milage.

There are some things you can check if you have the tools.

First, the two rubber fuel hoses on the back of the engine, they dry rot and reek havic on driveability, you probably should just go ahead and replace them.
Second, fuel pressure, Remove the feed banjo bolt and drill and tap it 1/8 pipe thread and reinstall it with a guage attached, 0 to 30 psi will be needed.
You should have 21-23 psi at idle and as you raise rpm the pressure should raise smoothly to 30+ psi, if not, you need a new overflow valve. $79. 00, it bolts in at the top of the pump just under the rad hose.
Third, Locate your lift pump between the starter and motor mount on the left lower of your engine, mounted with it is a fuel heater, there is a screen in the bottom of it, you can unscrew it like an oil filter, remove it and clean it out, I have found some that where almost completely clogged.
Pump timing is not something you can check your self, you will have to take it to a cummins shop that does spill port timing or come see us at JRE.
There are many other factors that affect milage, the list is huge!
Start with what I have suggested and you will be on your way to better milage for sure.

To Ted Jannety I like to thank you for your reply on the TDR about my fuel mileage I just have one question your repairs seem to me to be for a truck with alot of miles on it. I have a 98 2500 4x4 with 25,000 on it. my fuel mileage has been bad since i bought the truck in 12/97. I think your company is located in Conneticut just a littlle too far from right outside Philadelphia. If you think the repairs you stated still should be looked into I will try these solutions to see if they work. Also do you know of anyone in my area who is reliable to do my timing??? Getting ready to install torque plate and after joining TDR realized I might have a problem too fix before I start(mileage). . Forgot ot mention I have been running K&N on stock tires
