Well boys:

I'm pretty excited. I have all of the necessary gaskets and have soaked the bolts with liquid wrench all day today. As of tomorrow morning, the 21 cm turbine housing is history and a 12 will be installed. Right now, I can hit about 900* and 10 pounds of boost on a hill empty that I go across often at 55 mph in 5th gear. I'll go across this hill again tomorrow after the mods and see how it does. All that is waiting on me is to get the old housing off and to cut 1 1/4" out of the exhaust downpipe. I should really get power then. I'll post the results ;)

You will NOT gain significant horsepower. But what you will gain will surprise the heck out of you.

I put the 12CM housing on after doing only one thing... Opening up the exhaust. No turned up fuel, no injector changes, nada.

This was in January. Now, there was no snow or ice, but it was cold and rainy. I had gotten used to the way the truck responded, and was used to having to mash the pedal real hard to get going at anything but a very leisurely pace. Anyway, the first time I had to do a left turn into traffic, I nearly caused a serious traffic accident. The truck shot off into the street, broke the tires loose and I spun wildly, with the tail shooting off across the street and then attempting to pass me on the right!

Previous to this, I had merely driven the truck down the highway to home, and then to the school via the back roads. This was actually the first time I had to get into the busy intersection at the school's main entrance.

I did the same thing 2 or 3 more times before I got the hang of it. And then I got better tires, which helped a lot.

I'm sure people thought I was some sort of crazy nut... but honestly, I was so startled the first time I'm still amazed I didn't cause a serious wreck by doing a donut in the middle of a very busy street and intersection, and I doubt anyone was more startled than I was.

And just think, I went from the 18. 5 to the 12, you're going from the 21 :)

Well guys:

I went from a max unloaded temp of 900* to 700* and from 10 pounds of boost to a little over 20. I have instantaneous acceleration and no smoke now.

The turbo was off in twenty minutes and the housing was off in another fifteen minutes. Now, the hardest part of the job was the exhaust and it was absolutely horrible! cut 1" out first and that wasn't near enough. Had to cut out more and then couldn't get the downpipe separated from the rest of the exhaust or back in very well but finally did.

Overall, I'm very happy with today and the power I now have. I'll have to see how much better it tows. The next mods might be a set of injectors.

Thanks for the help guys,

John

Pyro Mounting

John,

Just out of curiosity, where is your pyrometer probe located? I am assuming it is post turbo from the temp readings you were getting, but figured it would be safer to ask. Sounds like you made a nice improvement to your truck.

Pre turbo Jeremy. It cooled off consideribly with all of that increased airflow. Next up might be injectors but i want it to stay as cool as possible for towing.

Injectors and such

Hi John,

I would say you are staying really cool right now. Did you turn your fuel down below the stock level once you turned it down? At my stock levels I could get 1050*F preturbo. With my 180 hp injectors in and a 16cm housing I can get 20 lb of boost and max out at 1100*F on the pyrometer. I am looking for some more improvements, but not until I get the stock transmission upgraded. So, I am done with the mmods until the transmission dies. I think that a set of POD injectors would really help you out. You can play with the pump settings to get the EGT that you want. Talk to you later.
