Hi,

I have a noise which is bugging the hell out of me. It occurs at part throttle only at about 12 to 14 lbs of boost. It sounds like a boost leak, but the boots and air horn are all tight. I only hear it when the windows are open. If I back off, below 10 lbs of boost, it goes away. If I punch it or roll on throttle, it disappears, up to and including 30lbs of boost. I have no problem getting rapid boost response, I mean 30 is immediate with heavy application of loud pedal. I'm running an EZ with a turnbuckle on the wastegate in addition to my sig. Does anyone have any brilliant ideas??

KK,

I have the same whistle at about 13psi. Go lower and it goes away or go higher and it goes away. I believe that it is just a harmonics tone from the turbo at psi level.

Noise at certain boost levels

I had a similar noise and thought it was my boost gauge or line.

long story but here is the end.

I took off my band clamps from the hose between aftercooler to the air intake horn cleaned the rubber to metal surfaces with a damp cloth and reinstalled... . tight. no more noise.

Mine seemed tight also!

I was thinking (hoping) that it was a harmonics issue also. I think maybe due to jjohn's (that's what we call those plastic blue boxes on construction sites) reply that I might do a little R&R work to eliminate any potential leeks. Thanks for the input.

Please dont take any offense jjohn!!

Clean the inside of the boots and all connections with some mild alcohol and you should never have issues again (Unless you have a ripped boot like MANY 2001 trucks on the drivers side INTERCOOLER connection where the boots rub on the sheetmetal from expansion) That was just an engineering oversight. My boot in that area was ripped open about 1" and I took a ball peen , wrench and prybar and bent that sheet metal back so It wont do any harm again (Plus the PDR boots help too ;) )

I was thinking about changing my user name anyway!

On second thought... . The wife thinks I'm full of $#!+ most of the time... Hum... Performance parts are critical to human existence aren't they?

go fix your leak Double K!

:D

1999's have a sheet metal problem as well.

I was checking into my boots and wow sure enough I had a sheet metal edge cutting into my lower intercooler boot on the drivers side as well.

a Pair of pliers and some choice words at DC took care of the problem. PDR boot replacement is on it's way. I don't know if there was a leak or not but I am sure it would have been eventually.

PS PDR boot $65, stock from dealer $144... And the dealer had to order it so...

Since really loading up my truck I too am hearing all kinds of new and wonderfull noises. Can't say what they are from though.

Sorry,

This may not be it, but it's worth mentioning...

I have a Westach dual EGT/Boot gauge and it started to make a noise that sounded like an air leak above 12-15psi.

I checked all the boost clamps and even made a tool to pressurize the boost system, but still had the noise.

Took the Westack gauge out and double clamped the rubber hose lines (thinking that it must be leaking under pressure) and still had the noise.

Finally I carefully inspected the rubber hose that came with the Westach gauge and found a small pin hole in it just before it clamped onto the guage. Cut out the bad hose and problems went away... Probably not the answer to your problem, but that's how a simple problem can give you fits... ;)
