Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 12 v and 24 v blocks the same?

a friend of mine just bought 98 ctd 24 valve with a 53 block that is cracked i would like to know if we can use a 12 v block instead.

The 98 block shoud be useable the earlier blocks use pipe threads where the 98 and up use o-ring fittings. Pistons will of course be different.

so it would have to be a 98 12 v block is what you are saying?

I don't think you will find a mounting hole for the crankshaft position sensor on a pre '98 12 valve block. I have heard that the '98 12 valves used the same block as the 24 valve though. Not sure if their are any other issues.

You might want to check with Piers. This last weekend I looked over the old Ford he is driving. It has a Cummins in it. I asked him what year. He said '02. However, it has a P7100 pump and a 12 valve head. He may have been pulling my leg a little bit. He also said the 150 amp fuse in the engine room was for his stereo! :-laf :-laf :-laf

Piers isn't pulling your leg. His 12v and mine started life as a late model 24v before tear down and build up as a 12v. The storm block is a nice feature for twins. The engine I used only had 13K as a 24v HO engine before I tore it down and built it as a 12v for my 93 truck. Anyone need a set of low mile stock 24v pistons.

I was under the impression that the 1st gen blocks didn't have the same motor mount bosses as the 2nd gens

I'm pretty sure my 12 valve doesn't have the crank sensor port.

Storm block = 24v block.



From everything I've read & heard the '98s use the same block 12v & 24v, the difference being minor (threads being metric on 24v for instance). The '98+ block has some improvements over the previous 12v block it replaced: http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/mt_2_feb98/lower_end.htm

Storm blocks had rails on the sides - they've got some serious meat. Anybody know anything about the ag application blocks?? I'd like to know what block Scheid or Haisley start with fresh when building a puller. There are many conflicting opinions on this but I'd like to see which block has the most potential.

The 12v blocks except for the 98 and maybe some late 97's were also different from th 24v blocks in the motor mount area. The 24v use a 4 bolt motor mount and the 12v used a 3bolt. The newer blocks have an extra pair of mounting bosses on each side to accomodate the different motor mounts.
