Does anybody know what they are or where I can find the horse power/ torque ratings for the various different years of the 12 valve motors? I'm planning to do a conversion and have been told to use the 98 12 valve because it has the highest factory HP. If this is true, what was done different for the earlier years that they were less HP/ TQ and what would be some basic add ons that could be done to bring up the power?

1994-1995 automatic transmission trucks were 160HP and less than desireable when trying to build a maximum performance engine, mainly because of the limitations on the pump.

1994-1995 manual transmission trucks were 175HP

1996-1998 auto transmission trucks were 180HP

1996-1998 manual transmission trucks were 215HP an this is the most desired engine/pump to have. It has the most potential of all the 12 valve motors.

The 1997-1998 trucks were equiped with hydro-boost breaks vs. the earlier years of vacume assist so this may be another thing to consider.

However, the 1996-8 California emissions trucks were 180 hp whether 5 speed or auto; they had an egr system. To be sure you have the 215 hp, look at the engine data plate on the side of the gear case for the hp rating and CPL 2023 or 2175.

Hey thanks for the info, but I have to ask a few more questions.

What makes the difference between the auto and manual trans power ratings for 96-98? Was the power lost in the auto’s converter, was the boost lowered or did they use different parts in the engine?

I am starting to gather parts to build a 1st gen, 2wd, crew cab, dually, NV5600 conversion. It will be used for hauling, pulling or driving on long trips, and I’m hoping to start out with the most power and than make adjustments from there.

Joe,

Thanks for catching me on leaving out the CA trucks. Being from east of the Mississippi I forget about those trucks :)

You mentioned the pistons are different on the 215 trucks. I was aware of this but what is different about them and why? Is the spray angle of injectors different and necessitated a different piston? Thanks for the education :)
