I replaced the EGR valve on my 98 12valve. I am not sure what it is needed for? Dealer tells me that it is a Federal requirement and is not a Kalifornia requirement so it did not fall under the 90,000 mile emissions warranty.

Now, after spending $250+ dollars ($350 via dealers parts room) I wonder what the darn thing is for? Does it affect the operation of my engine?

I will be moving to the Las Vegas area this summer and I understand that they do a smog test on diesels there.

Also, is there anyone out there that rebuilds them? Seems like $250 is a lot for a disposable part!

The EGR valve is ONLY required in CA on '96 and later 12 valve engines! Your dealer lies!!! When you move to Vegas you won't need it. Some of the members unfortunate enough to have the aggravating thing have removed it. Maybe one of them will chime in with the details on how to do it.
