If you were going to buy a used 3500 Cummins 4x4, would you go with a 12 valve or a 24 valve? What transmission would you pick? I am looking for dependablity and shifting gears is not a problem. I figure if it is a 12 valve it could have 60K plus miles, I assume with a Cummins that is not even broken in yet. Please give me the pro's and con's to these two choices.

Thanks

Dennis

'99-'01 24V with a manual, preferably a 6 speed. I like the power delivery much better in the 24V. I have driven a ton of both, and they are all good trucks. The 24V is likely to give you less problems, as long as you got good fuel pressure. :D

Avoid '98 24V trucks. First year problems... I had one of them, and needed an injection pump replaced at 60K.

Watch out for some 12V trucks, especially ones that smoke all colors but black... Can you say injector pump problems? Usually a rebuild will fix it.

I've owned both a 12V and now a 24V... they are both good. I think the 24V drives much nicer(12V was a '92, 24V a '99).

With a bit of care, either one would make a heck of a hauler!
