I have a bud who owns a machine shop. He is a Cheby racer, but I convinced him to get a Cummins tow truck(96 model). He machines heads and blocks for lots of local shops and dealers. He told me the other day that he has already worked on three 24 valve motors with the guides wiped out in less than 100,000 miles. The reason I bought a diesel is I did not want to work on it for at least 200,000. I think I will stick with the 1st geners. Mark

Fastmark,
I'm with you, these new emmission engines can't last under the operating conditions that they are put under, and the newer something is... cheaper, cheaper, cheaper.

On the other hand, this engine is a new design, so there is a whole different kettle of fish. Anyway, love my first gens, real reliable. #ad

The 94-98 ride better but are much more $$ to work on. Don't sell the first Genner short, though. They are easy to work on, you can get almost as much HP from them as you practically need. I don't think they can out run straight pump motor in the 1/4. But then again, if its a race you, I'll race any deisel heads up in my 65 hemi Coronet. I found it a fairly easy swap to put a 91 into my 84 crew cab. And I have something Dodge still does not make, 4 FACTORY real doors. Those quad cabs just make you wish you had some more room. If Dodge every gets a real 4 door, I might change my mind. I have had too many freinds with 24 valves autos that have had trouble, though.

I don't like to hear about the new 24v probs, soon I will have to buy a truck for the biz, and can't stand chevys, don't want fords, and would really hate to buy a dodge and have it turn out to be a lemon. At the rate the 24v is going, I will be better off buying the mitsubishi cab-over 4X4 at 12,000gvwr. I understand too the advantages of the inline pumpers nice trucks too. #ad

You can keep your 1 st gen,I feel the 94-98 are the best ever made. the 24 valves are nice too,but i think there are 2 many things to go wrong(electronically) and mechanically.
