If I was you, and I’m not you know, I’d run the drums until they needed work and then compare repair vs replacement costs depending on how happy I was with the drum brakes.
 
J henderson ..... Yes looks like im going to end up with 12K elec drums to start out since I dont want to have to special order a trailer and wait 5 weeks or who knows how long to get it. So it will get used some and see how it works.
 
Hey guys, well I called Big Tex and they said $3000 extra for Hyd disc on 12K tandem......ouch.

Looking online I see I could buy Kodiak hyd disc brake kits and a Dexter pump for $2000 If I wanted to upgrade it myself, right off the bat or I could get some use and upgrade when the elec brakes weaken.

Wonder if I pulled the brand new Dexter 12K elec brakes and drums off if anyone would buy them or they end up scrapped??
For that bump in price.....drums will be fine mr. salesman. Wow! While I prefer disc, I like my money to stay in my wallet longer.

Considering you can retrofit for far less I’d say they just don’t want to hire anyone capable of simple hydraulic plumbing for the occasional special order. It’s all about mfg costs when you’re selling on price.
 
The trailers with hyd discs are special order, but there are elec brake trailers at dealers in the size I want.

Do you need 12k axles v/s 10k? They are about $1500 more. A 12k equipped trailer is a serious trailer and will require a serious truck, to put them to full use.

This is a good point. When I ordered my PJ, I had to fight my natural urge to overbuy/over-spec, as you'll end up with a dandy trailer that you can't carry anything on.
 
Drums are worthless when it matters. Maybe MAYBE they’ll continue working down to a full stop from highway speed. (Ha!) Same for spec’ng worst design leaf when torsion is available.

Go over to MR TRUCK (Kent Sunderling) and see the fine test he did of brand new drums against ANTILOCK trailer disc brakes and digital controller by TUSON some years ago now.

FWIW, I no longer see ANYONE with the common sense to keep towing speeds at or below 65-mph. And I’ve never seen load or equipment securement that was worthy of mention by the typical contractor or rancher. It’s a deadly combination.

The movie Idiocracy was prescient. The shoe fits you guys. Wake up. You’ll pay outrageous money for a pickemup and then act like you’re broke when Towing is involved.

A pickup is the least stable vehicle on the road. A bad choice. Towing ONLY makes that worse.

Reduce the risk, don’t heighten it.

Know the limits. Can’t get out of its own way above 55. Trip hazards, etc. Terrible FF/RR weight balance.

Let’s take away your antilock and modern tires. Gadgets and some tech are fig leaves for bad design per highway requirements.
 
I do remember watching a documentary years ago where SUV's were the most roll over unsafe vehicles. Never heard that about pickup trucks tho.

Detroit would have disappeared if it weren’t for the profit on pickups. Guess how that effects media attention. Google results. Etc.

The physics is simple enough.

If the bed isn’t carrying a constant load, it was the wrong choice as vehicle. That load is one that CANNOT be carried in a passenger compartment (as a van is otherwise superior).

You have one chance. Should the vehicle be high risk where a lower risk vehicle would have been otherwise as good if not better.?
