Cummins 6bt in an S-10

Got er fired up tonight. I just need to get the slave cylinder bled and I should be good to go. My ol 1999 F350 had 210K on the V10 auto. Now its a 12V with a big stick coming out of the floor. The 5" straight pipe sounds cool just idling. I cant wait to shift through the gears. I havent driven it yet so I am still trying to convince myself the swap was worth all the money and headaches. After I drive it i am sure it will be well worth it. Oo.
 
Trust me, it will be worth it. I got my 99 F350 on the road a few weeks ago, and love every second of driving it with the 6BT under the hood. Let us know how it goes down the road.
 
You'll definitely luv it. I know my '87 is fun to drive and I just luv telling people I took out a big block Ford and replaced it with a straight six Dodge. I'm still working our some bugs though, but that happens when you do something over your head.
 
One thing you guys might be able to help me with. Is there a way to hook up my tach to the 12V. Its something I totally forgot about until I fired it up. Any thougts???
 
A tach sensor from a 93 Ford F350 with an IDI diesel, mounted to the front of the engine, right off the balancer will work. Ground one side of the sensor, and the other goes to a tach wire off of the PCM. Thats how my SD was, and Im pretty sure the OBS trucks are the same way.

Those have to be some awesome trucks, could you please post up some pics? I would really like to have a 97 12v(I'm partial to the older style) but its probably just a dream at this point.

now im gettin ******

Im having problems getting this dayum slave cylinder bled. I'm using a '99 F350 Clutch MC and line attached to a 1997 NV4500 slave cylinder with a NV5600 transmission. I searched and saw good things about the 97 5 speed slave. Well Im trying to bleed it and having problems. I filled the slave with fluid and attached the line. Then I pumped the slave about a million times trying to get the air out. After a few hours of pumping, filling, pumping, filling Im not sure what to try next. With the pedal all the way to the floor I can barely get it in 2nd,5th and 6th. No way can I get Reverse or 1st. It feels like the slave isnt fully disengaging the clutch because when I can get it in 2nd the clutch engages right off the floor. Sometimes if I cant get it in gear the truck will still go forward very slowly like it wants to go in gear but cant.



Some thoughts... ...

#1 Theres still air in the system some where. How do I get it???



#2 Does a NV4500 slave cylinder have enough throw to disenage a NV5600 clutch??



#3 I am trying to bleed the system while its in the truck. Is it neccessary to remove the whole system and bench bleed it?? Whats the correct way to bleed the system???



#4 Any other ideas??

When the clutch pedal is released the master cyl. plunger must be fully extended to open the port to the reservoir. If it is blocked you can never get the air out. I am using the same slave as you but with the GM master cyl. When I bled mine I pumped the slave by hand with the m/c cap off. The pedal was still no good, I then pumped the clutch pedal very fast by hand bringing the pedal all the way to the top each time to allow in fluid. I then let the truck sit over night with the m/c cap off to allow the small air bubbles to escape. The pedal was good the next day.

I think the bore size on the GM m/c is 1" and the Dodge is 7/8" or 15/16". If all the air is out of yours the bore or stroke of the Ford m/c may be too small to supply fluid to the Dodge slave.
 
Im not sure how the Dodge setup is, but on the Fords it is necessary to bleed the system by pumping the slave cylinder with the unit straight up and down. It should be possible to do it with the whole setup still on the truck, this is how I did mine. If you can pull the slave out, just turn it so it is straight up and down, make sure the master cylinder is full, and begin to pump the slave. Push it in 100%, hold for 10 seconds, then release it slowly. Do this five or 6 times. Making sure the master cylinder reservoir never runs out of fluid. If you have someone else there to watch for air bubbles in the reservoir, you will know how much progress you are making. Hope this helps.

Hey Cooker, Its good to hear from you. Yeah i finally decided to do the swap. If I can get over these last few hangups I should be ready to roll.



Ive tried to bleed the slave manually and also by pumping the clutch. NO SUCCESS!!! Im still at the point where I can barely get it in some gears and not others. If it does go into gear the clutch engages right off the floor. It definately feels like the clutch is NOT fully disengaging. Could anything else be causing this??



The only other thing I can think of is the ford clutch MC is smaller than the Dodge slave cylinder so maybe it is not pushing enough fluid to the slave in order to fully disenage the clutch. I compared the ford slave to the dodge slave and the dodge slave is bigger but not by a whole lot. I can hear it working down there when I push in the clutch but it must not be fully disengaging????



As a last resort I guess I will take everything out of the truck and try and bench bleed the whole system. If that doesnt work I might have to try a smaller slave or bigger MC???

Just a thought, do you have dowel pins in your motor? When I installed my bellhousing adapter, FordCummins didnt have any dowel pins in it, and as a result the motor and trans werent 100% aligned, so the input shaft was always dragging, making it very difficult to get in gear. I had a brand new hydraulic system, but the problem was with the misalignment. Just one more thing to check... ... .
