Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Break in for Turbo

I'm just in the planning stages right now, but I'm looking for ideas on where to start. I have a 12v out of a 97. It ran faithfully for 310K. It has a cracked head and excessive wear in number 5 cylinder ( I don't know how much wear yet ) We put another motor in out of a wreck, so that leaves me with a builder. I'm going to swap this into an older pickup. This will be a tow vehicle and have a nv5600. How much can a 5. 9 be over bored? I have another 1st gen motor ( supposed to have a bad cam. Can I use the head from the 1st gen? I did notice that there is a notch for clearance for the p pump. Looks like I could make the notch with a grinder. Will probably have the head machined to handle a big single turbo, and do the bottom tapping and better head bolts. While I'm in there what internal mods are suggested? Strong, reliable towing is what I want. What turbo/injectors and fuel mods are suggested.

I will be interested in following this thread as I am in the process of building a 97 engine CPL 2175. I am going to install this in my first gen. I will tell you what I'm trying for a tow package. A PDR cam, # 10 Plate in the pump, a PDR HX40 turbo, timing at 15. 5, a set of balanced 215 injectors, an intercooler from an 02, 4" exhaust, a bigger air box and filter. Naturally I used new cummins pistons, new head (purchased last fall when PDR had a sale on them),new bearings, new rod and main bolts, new oil and water pumps, new oil cooler core etc. Don't know how this will work, I use this truck for towing only. No question, I would balance the rotating assembly and add a girdle, total cost under $500 extra.

If I had it to do over I would look harder at fire-ring vs. o-ring and also machine block and head for 14mm head studs. The last 2 really depends on what plans you have power wise. Good Luck

That's how mine is built: Balanced, girdled, studded (14's both top and bottom) punched, milled pistons, Bigger cam (PDR stage 3) O-Ringed, Twins, Pump, Injectors, Water/Meth... . blah, blah... . you know the drill $$$$$$$$$$

john krmpotic - just putting this out for other members to see, no attacks meant here, but i did the same thing that you did last fall, i bought a head from piers while they were on sale, i needed one due to having a crack in my stock head that was not fixable, needles to say i thought i got a great deal on the head, which i did at the time, i had a local performance shop fire ring the head, and install the head on my truck, used a . 20th over head gasket and ARP 12mm studs. had no problems, truck ran great. just before i got to do one of the last retorques that my local shop recommended, i blew a head gasket on my truck. it hadnt even been 5,000 miles and the gasket blew. i called my local shop up and decided that i would do the work this time, cause i didnt have the money at the time. soo i got the head off the truck, sure enough the gasket had blown, and it apeard that the fire ring on the #4 cylinder had cracked, and when i took the head off, a chunk broke off. took the head up the shop, had them look things over, took the head to have it inspected, turns out that the head was almost . 010 thousandths out of spec. needes to say i was ******, but what could i do. sooo just a fair warning, have you head checked before you get it on your engine, could mine have been a fluke, who knows, but i paid clost to $500 for that head, and it failed on me. sorry for the long post just thought id share my problems, and hope to keep anhter truck from having the same problem that mine did.

I'm asuming that you guys are having the crank balanced. The girdle must be some kinda block reinforcement? Can you point me to a thread that talks about this in more detail. I don't want to skip any of the important steps. KDP for instance. How much did you punch out your cylinders Jim Fulmer? I'm supposed to have some wear in one of mine and want to know how far over you can take them. Does any body make oversize pistons to accomidate punching the cylinders. Will probably do the fire rings. ATS is local for me may talk to them about the machine work. Does anyone know for sure if I can use a head off of a first gen on my 97 block?
