Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 12v fuel leak

ive been noticing a small puddle of what seems to be diesel fuel under the front differential after the truck has sat for a while. ive done my best to locate this leak, and have not been able to find it. ive checkd all banjo fittings ive inspected the fuel filter housing for leaks, i looked as best as i could at the fuel heater/strainer and have not found anything leaking. i did notice what seemed to be a drop of diesel fuel on the bottom of the fuel pump when i was under the truck looking. i am stumped guys. help! any suggestions, or other things i should be lookin at? thanks in advance!

It could well be your fuel pump. I changed mine because it was leaking. It was pumping fine but leaking through a weep hole. I'm not sure if you'll have to change your pump. If you do a search on the subject,you might find that its just a bad o-ring in it. I'd go ahead and degrease the area to be sure thats where its coming from. Good luck

I agree with pumperdude, degrease and then start looking. A couple of weeks ago I started see diesel under my truck and couldn't find it. I degreased everything and started it, then had revved the motor up in neutral and got out a flashlight and looked everywhere. I finally found it! Get THIS!!! The dealership pulled my injection pump a while back, well they couldn't figure it out so they took a grinder to anything metal that was in there way. Then they just repainted anything they hit with the grinder. Well they knicked a metal fuel line and it took a year to finally start leaking fuel, and I found it when the motor was revving. Good luck, be wary if the dealership has touched yours lately.

You might run your hands around the rubber fuel lines. They are know for cracking... .

When I had a small drip from the lift pump it was the fuel heater. I don't think I have been clear just what was involved in earlier posts so here are some pictures to clarify. The first one is the fuel heater. In this picture the rivits are drilled out.

This one shows the burned contact. The cover and heater element have been removed in this picture.

This one shows where the leak was at the base of the electrical contact.

When the engine is running this is an air leak. When it is stopped fuel seeps out here and there is a little drip. It's easy to check. Just remove the heater from the assembly. Put it back together without the fuel heater and see if the problem goes away.

i found it finally!

well guys i took a good look today and with my motor running i noticed small drops of fuel dripping off the return overflow line. got a screw driver and was able to "feel" the line and felt a crack in it. going to take it off and either solder the line, or put some jb weld on it and call it done. thanks for the tips guys.

Is it the metal line leaking or the rubber line that connects to it? Mine was leaking out of the ends of the rubber lines. They were so badly cracked that fuel was oozing out right under the clamps onto the metal line.

the actual metal line has a small crack in it. i can take a screw driver and run it over the line and physicaly feel the crack in the line. im going to wait to fix it untill i do my injectors, it should be alot easier because the intake horn, and injector lines will out of the way. i did check the rubber it's self and did not find any cracks.

I would suggest that soldering the line would be better. I've tried using it for the same problem on a tractor. To much vibration, and it still wound up breaking again.

Mine cracked in the same place. It's a real SOB to find it though.
