I have 2002 auto that I have owned since new. My neighbor has a clean 96, 5 speed for sale. I am pretty up to date on the 12v engine and think I would like to try one. What would I be losing by going to the 96. Do the brakes really suck? I know about the KDP and the fifth gear nut issue. What else should I consider? By the way I tow 8-10,000 lbs. often. Thanks.

Drums in the back with vacume assist I think. Many think that is better than hydro assist... I would agree maybe. You might have to deal with valve adjustments, static timing and some of the other issues you mentioned before, but you gets lots of other good stuff with it. No liftpump worries, lots of cheap power, no electronics,... I would go for it. Lots of my buddies have 24 valves. I wouldn't trade them, but their interiors are nice and maybe a bit more plush. Just depends on what you hold as important. Others with more experience will chime in I'm sure.

The 5 spd. would definitely be better for towing than the auto. The 02 does have 4 wheel discs though, which I prefer. And with a aux. lift pump and FP gauge you really don't have to worry about the VP44.

Wish I could have them both! I have been pleased with my 02, bought it new, kept it stock and I've put 220,000 on it. I think I would like some more power though so a straight shift 12v has a lot of appeal right now. Thanks for the input.
