a friend has a 96 with 98k miles and is getting 10 mpg empty, egts high and it runs crappy. He took it somewhere in oregon and they put a scanner on it and said the exhaust had leaks which they fixed for $500. Still runs like crap. Can he run his own codes on a 96? What might be some things to look at, the lift pump has never been changed. I have an 03, so i don't know what to tell him; but I did send him to this site and told him if he did'nt feel he got his moneys worth, I would personally give him $35 back! Now top that for membership drive. Ed

Maybe the timing slipped? Does it smoke? (cold, under load, high idle, after sex, etc. )

A boost guage on it (even temporarily) would confirm boost pressure and rule out leaks.

First, high egt's and poor mileage mean that the fuel/air ratio is too fat. If the motor isnt BOMBed, then it just aint gettin' air~! Anybody think to look at the air filter? Also, look at the waste gate or boost hoses as a source of bad performance. If it isnt making boost, the motor isnt getting any air. If a boost hose is blown off, the motor isnt getting any air. The beauty of the 12valve motors is, there are NO COMPUTERS to scan! Make sure your friend gets guages soon... he could diagnose this himself!

As a new guy I don't know much. But, disconnect the exhaust at the Turbo. Does this bring back the power? Could be the cat.

It would really help if we knew how much boost he was putting out? How high are the egt's. How much smoke blue or black?

Check and tighten boost line fittings. Does it have a plugged cat? Mine was. Gained back a lot of power after fixing the cat.

Wouldn't hurt to check fuel pressure to make sure lift pump is working.

Slipped timing, boost hose clamps, clogged cat, air filter, exhaust brake that's partly closed, waste gate stuck, that's what I'd be checking.

Good luck, Ronnie
