I was wondering if someone could tell me if there is a kit for swapping out a 1996 12 valve for a newer 24 valve engine. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I personally don;t know, but just curious why you would want to? With there vp44 inj pumps, they are less reliable then the 12v. If you like the sound of them, have your 12v fire ringed, and head studed and set the timing to 17-21degrees. I will admit, the 24v's do sound nice and loud.

my neighbor did his 98 to a 24v he got the engine with a the wiring from the donor and installed the whole mess in to his truck. dont recall any snags or major problems. good luck

Painless Wiring just started making harness for the Cummins engines. I know they make a 12v harness for swaps and I was thinking I saw where they made a harness for the 24v also.

Should be a pretty straight forward swap. Will be a direct bolt in. The turbo might even line up correctly with the down pipe.

Wiring would be the trickest part.

The only way it will work is if you use the entire truck wire harness unless you feel comfortable cutting and splicing wire harnesses. At the very least you will have to change the dash out to the newer one because the fuse block plugs that come thru the firewall are quite a bit different. Im building a truck right now with a 97 drivetrain in a 2000 truck so Im just using the older style dash to accomodate for the fuse block wiring and then splicing the rear cab harness into the older fuse block. You would basically need to buy an entire donor truck to make it all work right. I would suggest doing more searching for a used motor to replace yours first unless you have a nice garage and lots of free time to make the swap. I have a few complete 12 valve motors around that would work for you. Here is a picture of my truck Im building.

Best of luck, Chris
