I would like to adjust the valves on my new to me 91. Is there any special instructions or procedures for adjusting? I have done old Chevy straight sixes with engine running. Can I do this on my 5. 9? Any help is greatly appreciated.

No! It's not equipped w/ hydrolic lifters.

Set engine at TDC #1 and adjust;

#1In and EX

#2In

#3Ex

#4In

#5Ex

Mark these w/a paint marker as you adjust. You will then have to adjust the valves you did not mark.

Paint mark the pulley and rotate 360, or untill the #6 piston is TDC on compression. These two valves will have lash.

Adjust the other valves;

#2Ex

#3In

#4Ex

#5In

#6In/Ex

set In to . 010"

set Ex to . 020"

tighten lock nut to 18lbs ft torque

Thank you mucho. Thanks to this website I have gauges installed, all fluids changed, an idea of how the VE pump works and a list of wants, 16 cm turbo housing, new injectors, borgeson steering, BHAF, ... . , all in a month of ownership. Wants for BT (black truck), hear the turbo whine, enjoy 20 mpg, pull anything, any time, make the 300k mark without too much expense. We are at 170k now (people can't believe 170K, I say "hey, its a Cummins") with rebuilt front end, transmission, fuel pump. Fresh start with all new fluids, gauges. Valves next. Thanks again.
