I spit the pinion seal out the front of the factory dana 70U a month ago. I drove the truck home and ruined the gears and bearings. I figured it was time to go through the rear anyways and regear it the way i wanted. When I got home i tucked the ugly dodge behind the house. 2 months later I went to move the truck to driveway for the 14 bolt swap. the truck moved 5 feet and wouldnt go no further. quick assessment showed the tires were sunk maybe 1 inch so i started rocking it and doing Boosted 4th gear assualts. she moved another 10 feet and stopped.

End Result. the 1st picture is also the end result. you can still see the under the axle housing and frame rail... . this thing is getting a spool in the rear and 4wd.

dear tdr web editors it would be cool if you could just post a pic from your computer in a particular place in your write up... not just as an attachment wherever the attachment goes to. thx.

as you can see in the pics the gm 14 bolt is similar width to the dana 70U the dana is 1/4 wider on the wms to wms. The leaf perch to perch on the dana is 44" the GM is 43" so it must be cut off and new made to replace it at 44". the pinion length from center of axle tube to center of U-joint is shorter on the 14 bolt 12. 5" vs. 13. 5" on the dana 70U. also visible in the pics is the size difference in the brakes. the 14 bolt has 15 inchers vs. the dana's 14" drums. in the one picture there is a orange hammer handle against the drivers side axle tube. that is where all 2 brake lines meet and split on the dana 70U. the GM 14 bolt has this on the top of the center section. The shock brackets on the GM14 bolt will need to be trimmed off and the shock brackets from the dana 70 will bolt right up to the 14 bolt.

I dont like ABS. ABS has negative results in mud. The GM 14 bolt from the suburban didnt have provisions for RWAL(rear wheel antilock brakes), no sensor on housing. one of the bigger pains is the suburban had a funky parking brake setup which had cables running from axle housing to each side of frame. then had a cable that looped to both cables and the cable that hooked to the pedal hooked to the middle of the loop. both complex and not very offroad friendly.

The dodge's end use will be daily driver, access to my wet hunting property i use for hunting, shooting range, and bonfires. friday night "convoyin" at 100+ to my bonfires. Highway truck and around town truck since it gets better fuel economy than the common rails. over the summer it will probably recieve a divorced np205 and a solid front axle-probably a dana 44 to stay light.
