The value and whether or not to fix it is not for you or I to decide.

People like you are why safety inspections are required most everywhere. Would you feel the same if your daughter or son was driving it? How Would you feel if your son or daughter got hit by some idiot with the same attitude because his ball joint wore out 10k miles ago, finally separated at 60mph and hit your son/daughter head on? Drive it til it breaks right? Terrible advice. You should probably not be offering your "help" on an automotive forum.

guys car has a little bit of a clutch problem in first gear only... its not slipping, its not like he cant shift gears so the chances are the clutch face is a bit warped or glazed and it will drive like that for the life of the clutch.

FWIW I am a retired mechanic who at one point in his life had 3 ASE Master Certifications so dont go off down the rabbit hole with suppositions and predictions of mechanical demise that you lack the knowledge to back up.

.

Neither you nor i know the problem. But he is proactively trying to find the problem. Have you ever seen a clutch/flywheel (more likely) problem get better?

I'd not brag too loudly about your credentials if you make a habit of giving out such poor advice.

Because mechanical issues will go away if ignored long enough (insert sarcasm here)

In reality it's the exact opposite, and as a 30 year mechanic you likely know this. Safety aside, Ignoring a known problem for long enough only makes the problem more expensive to fix.
