DEF purity?

More and More Rams out on the streets!

MY work rig (day job) is a '07 Freightliner Columbia with a 14 L rated at 515 HP. At times it will start "chugging" and belch black smoke like crazy... sort of like a miss almost. Seems to be worse now that the weather has cooled off somewhat . Any ideas as to what happening ? TIA!!

Sounds like an EGR malfunction. There is a "V-Pod" and several other controls involved in that. I will ask in the morning, we work on 60 series constantly and will very surprised if I don't get an accurate answer right off the bat.
Any check engine light activity?

Mike.

Also, look at the actuator/ vanes on the turbo, about 30% of the ones i've repaired had a worn out / sticking linkage / vanes in the turbo. if the turbo is fine, the Harness to the Vpod or the Vpod has been the culprit. I have screen shots on DDDL of one running right and one where the vpod/ computer cannot control the turbo due to wear in the turbo itself. a quick test is to slowly press your accelerator down and at a certain point, you can get it to surge ~ 32% pedal position or so..

This is the one of the bad turbo...

Look at where the rod for the variable vane control comes out of the turbo if it is loose and leaking exhaust past it is a pretty good sign that the vanes are worn. You may also notice with it running that you can wiggle that shaft and make it spool up.
You can also check on the front of the egr valve there is a small inspection plate with I think 1 Allen head screw that you can loosen. Under the plate is the end of the egr valve shaft, you can turn it with stubby flat screw driver 1/4 turn to verify the valve is not binding.

Yes the cel will light up sometimes not always though when it screws up. If I get a chance I will have a look see at that shaft and see what happens when I wiggle it around . Is it normal for these things to spool up and sound like a 747 on take off just sitting there at idle ??

Yes, the spooling noise is normal at idle.

If you want send me the last 6 of the truck vin, then we know exactly which turbo we are dealing with. Some are more problematic than others. An '07 unit is getting pretty close to the end of production so it may not have the R23534361 turbo that has a high replacement rate.

I have nothing on S60's, but yes, VGT's on the big engines do get like turbo fans at idle without warning. I can say Mack MP7's and the Volvo eq will rack the turbo at idle to keep warm. Those engines will lope and surge at idle if the EGR diff pressure tubes are clogged. Very common.

Ok, you do have the R23534361 turbo. There is an actuator kit for that but most change out the entire unit.

Still might be the V-Pod that is giving trouble.

I will go out to the Service Department in a bit and get some answers for you (or more questions)....I have to finish orders right now so it may be this evening before I get back to you.

Mike.

Is is doing it when you are shifting gears??

Right off the bat here I'm being told turbo. Don't bother with just the actuator, change the complete unit.

Do your diagnostics for sure but the money here is on the turbo.

Mike.

Seems to do it whenever it wants too... sometimes worse then others, as to where the truck will buck pretty bad. Like this morning fully (over?) loaded with 26 pallets of food product , can you say HEAVY, I actually had to get out of it several times it was so violent. But, like a lot of places IF it makes it back to the dock, it must be OK to send out again ! Lead driver, dispatcher clown says he will have mechanic look at it sometime this week, we shall see. I've been kinda thinking turbo my self since I been driving it based on previous trucks I drove back in the day, these newer emissions things are different to me, and not always for the better either !!! Thanks for the assistance guys, appreciate it ! As for the 32% thing above , I would have to say no , as it will do it just starting out ., or going down the highway and go 75-100% on the go go pedal.

Does the throttle position sensor have a dead spot in it? This will cause bucking pretty bad also and will take a tooth of a transmission gear if left go.
