Friend has a ‘14 ED that he did an oil change on just like he has many times before. Finished the oil change and started the truck no problems. Went to put it into gear and it will not go into gear. Message says to return to park and reselect desired gear. Tried many times and keeps doing the same thing. Any ideas?

sounds like the dial shift selector, correct? Have him crawl back under and see if there has been any unwanted movement by the shift motor.

EDIT: Also, if it is dial shift AND he didn't see any movement by the shift motor, might consider resetting the truck... remove battery(ies?), let it set for 30 minitutes, reconnect, and see if this mad a difference.

Just throwing darts at it.

Cheers, Ron

Well, thanks for the ideas! Now, for the sad part and it pains me to post this, but sometimes you just have to laugh. This guy really is mechanically inclined and very good with vehicles which is why this is so painful. He, he removed the drain plug for the transmission. He changed the oil filter and added oil.
Now, this is proof that doing vehicle maintenance when you’re still intoxicated from the night before is a bad idea. Not only is he now low on transmission fluid, he’s wasted a new filter and fresh oil. We did get a good laugh out of it tho.

Am I missing something? Why did he waste a filter and fluid? Did he leave the drain plug out when he filled it? Did he add engine oil and engine oil filter? I’m confused.

It's odd that after seeing this thread, I found another thread on another forum where the exact same thing happened fairly recently. Is there something about the drain plug placement that could lead to draining the wrong compartment? Also***and I am not vouching for this or trying to start something***but that fellow CLAIMS that Valvoline tech line told him they make the OEM fluid, and Maxlife is OK. A little more digging, and it seems that a lot of folks racking up miles are running it. Whether it's true, or the outrageous cost of the OEM fluid is causing people to gamble, I don't know.

On Edit: The other thread was not recent, but 11/16

From what I gather, he drained the transmission instead of the crankcase, wasting the transmission fluid, then changed the oil filter, added the new oil to the crankcase, then started the engine, wasting the new oil. I guess he could leave the new oil filter...

Got it!

He removed the old filter and put a new one on. Removed the drain plug for the transmission thinking it was the engine oil plug. Added new oil to the old oil and started the truck and let it run. Checked the oil and it was waaaay too high. Figured when he drained the oil it didn’t all come out. So he removed the plug again, transmission plug, and more fluid came out. When it stopped and hardly any came out, he realized something wasn’t right. That’s when I entered the picture when I heard him yelling.
He then drained the actual engine oil and removed the filter. While doing so, he failed to realize the engine now had way more oil in it than his drain pan could accommodate. Oil overflowed the drain pan and ran all over his driveway. He has cases of oil and filters on hand so that wasn’t really a big deal. The problem is, he does not have transmission fluid on hand and needed the truck for work today.
