Hmmm... . ? Somehow I missed all the coverage of this story on the national news:

Phoenix boy, 14, shoots armed intruder while watching three younger siblings | Fox News

From the link above:

A 14-year-old Phoenix boy shot an intruder who broke into his home while brandishing a gun as the teenager watched his three younger siblings, police said.

The teen and his brothers and sisters were at home alone at their residence at 55th Avenue and Baseline when a woman rang the doorbell Friday. The teen didn't open the door because he didn't recognize her, Police Officer James Holmes said Saturday.

Soon after, the teen heard a bang on the door, rushed his siblings upstairs and got a handgun from his parent's bedroom. When he got to the top of the stairs, he saw a man breaking through the front door and point a gun at him.

The boy shot the 37-year-old man, who is in critical condition but expected to survive and be booked into jail.

Holmes said the suspect did not get a shot off. He declined to release his name until he is booked into jail.

The woman who rang the home's doorbell got away.

Holmes hailed the teen's actions and his parents for teaching the kids to never open the door to strangers.

"The police and indeed our community does not ever want to see a situation where a teenager of that age has to take a weapon to protect his family ... but this young man did exactly what he should have done," he said. "I'm not sure he gave full thought about what he had to do. He just acted. "

Holmes said that the gun the teen grabbed was his father's, but did not know whether the boy had been trained to use it.

He said the family, whose names were not released, is declining to speak to reporters about the ordeal, saying that they "are all pretty traumatized. "

"The dad was pretty much out of his mind with distress, officers couldn't even talk to him," Holmes said. "It's going to take them a while to recover mentally. "

He said police don't yet know what the suspect's intentions were and that will be one of the first questions they ask him when he is well enough to talk.

"This was mid-block in a neighborhood, at 4:30 in the afternoon in summertime and children are there," he said. "They just took a heck of a gamble for this particular house, and we've got to try to figure out why. "

Holmes added that the family is lucky that the teen acted so swiftly and effectively.

"As ugly as this is, and as much as this family is going through, we don't have injured children on our hands," he said.

Bah!! Real gun control in action!! HE HIT WHAT HE WAS AIMING AT!!! Was he trained to use it?!?! Apparently..... he hit what he was aiming for... Hopefully, his Dad will teach him double-tap techiniques after this, so the taxpayer won't be paying for any more medical bills or jailing costs... .

... . and park the vehicle in the national park, next to the "Caution: Bears" sign... . :D

Was he trained to use the gun... ... aparrently! Awesome kid to handle that situation so effectively.

That ain't no lie!! I hope my kids can shoot a handgun that well at 14!! I didn't have enough experience at that age... . I'd have had to use my 6mm Remington or Savage double barreled 20ga to hit anything... . I can hear my mother now... . "Why didn't you shoot him as he came in the door!?!?! Now there's blood all over the hallway floor, and guess WHO has to clean that up..... and those deputies tracked mud all over the floor!?!? And GUESS WHO has to clean that up!?!!? You treat me like a dog!!" ... ..... :sigh: ... ... ... My mother... . can't live with her, can't shoot her without getting shot... ... . I never understood it was an insult when they said,"Your momma wears combat boots. " I got in trouble for carrying a rifle to school one day in the back seat of my truck... . funny, Mom came up to the school, and just ate my backside up one side and down the other... . then she threw her purse on the counter, and there was a resounding "THUD"... . that sounded like a . 38 pistol... ... I didn't mention it to her, but couldn't stop laughing while she continued to slap me on the top of the head to quit... . :-laf

Ok, ok, last one..... My friends thought it was funny to buy me the "You might be a redneck" T-shirt for my birthday... . It was the one that read,"You might be a Redneck, if... . Bikers back down from your momma... " And they drew a nametag on the woman and put my mother's name on it... ... ... . I never showed that to her..... I don't think I would have survived to be 17... :D

,

From the Wifes point of view on this is its great the the young person had his wits about himself to take the action that he did. But her thinking is what is a 14 year old doing home on his own in this day its not a good idea to leave kids at home. We were fortunate that the wife worked at the time the kids were at school and was home before they got out. She worked at the school district and lots of the time she could pick them up on the way home. We just think 14 is kind of young to be home alone.

I'm kinda torn on that one, BIG..... I think it depends on the situation. 14 is old enough, if the kid is mentally old enough, IMO. When I was 14 I was capable of living on my own... . The first time I left home, I was 15, had two horses, and it took my Dad 4 weeks to find me. I made over $1000 dollars in that time, too..... But then, I'm an abnormality..... no comments needed... :D

My mother was self employed, my father had died 7 years before that, and I was perfectly capable of being home alone. That being said, I had a Weimaraner dog that would tear your butt off if you came in and weren't know.

i think 14 is plenty old enough, at that age i had several firearms in my room and used them often. At 15 my parents would go on vacation for several week and i would run the business, that included running the employees, customers, payroll and bills. Then again most kids today have no idea what responsibly, honesty, reliability, and good work ethic mean. I was more of adult at 15 then they are at 20 - 25. I got wooped as a kid and it made me a better person. I'm glad the law is supporting this kid, family the way they should and i'm glad that this kid was raised to use his head.

If he can handle a handgun properly which it sounds like he did and possibly had a pact with his father to protect his siblings I think he can come babysit my grandkids anytime I'll even arm him with my Grizzly LAR 45 win mag

IT's funny how things have changed in the last 15 years..... I hired two high school age kids, and I've been teaching them how to do things here on the ranch... . I've got them building fence right now. They're perfectly capable, but they need to be taught how to do EVERYTHING!!! They can't even drive a standard..... I was shocked!! I don't have autos!! Well, not that will actually move themselves!! I traded for an old '89 just so I had something they could drive without me having to shuttle them around... . They can't weld, either. They didn't know how to mix concrete when they first came out... ... I asked them what they could do... ... I just got blank stares and sheepish smiles... . Just about everyone I know at that age could do any of those things and then some!!! GOD HELP US!!!
