Ha.. made ya look....I only have a couple

On the ongoing saga of my brother's 2011 5.7L 1500 CC 4wd, he is now putting in a replacement transmission since OD took out the case and it cannot be rebuilt, I told him to get it re-flashed for the latest updates and clear any hard codes once its back together, but he is getting the run around from local dealers.. Some are saying its a couple hundred to do, some are saying it's not worth it as they don't really fix anything, and one said just simply tie the two battery cables together to reset the system. ( that may work for soft codes, but I don't think it will reset it back to clean)

I know on the HD trucks there are updates that generally make things better and fix issues / customer complaints but know very little about the LD offerings as I have not had one since 2000.

The trans is a take out of a wrecked truck as a REMAN was not worth the cost for the vehicle at this time and it needs to get back in service, any other recommendations? He is thinking about flushing the cooler, obviously filters and fluids, came with a TC and was a running driving truck before being t-boned.

I have the VIN. if that is helpful, he has owned it since 2008, but thinks its never been update on the software side

I could see the couple hundred cost factor with what's involved in the Wi-Tech software hoops. The ones saying it won't make a difference must be the same ones that didn't won't to do the Apple software update a while back do to the changes! Yes, trying the cables to clean reset is good start before going to get updates. How many dealers has he tried? Maybe a call further up the food chain might be needed since dealers aren't providing customer support for a product. Seems quite funny that a dealer is refusing to take someones money!

Someone else might have better info, the flashes are not listed as part of a transmission change. So you might be fine there, they do run like $185 for my dealer if something standard.

-------------------

PCM / TCM FLASH PROGRAMING
This procedure will need to be done when one or more of the following situations are true:

  1. Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has been replaced.
  2. A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is set P1602 - PCM Not Programmed.
  3. An updated calibration or software release is available for either the PCM or TCM ECUs.
----------------------

Looks like you will need to do a Quick Learn procedure and there is also a Drive Learn procedure. The Drive Learn is listed an not necessary all the time and could be used to tune in a certain issue.

------------------
Quicklearn

From the “Home” screen, select “ECU View”
  • Select “PCM/ECM”
  • Select “Misc. Functions”
  • Select “Quicklearn” and follow the on screen instructions.
  • When complete, select “Finish”

Checked the TSB's nothing stands out there is a recall for the Shift Interlock and there is some sort of Customer Satisfaction Notification V51 Reprogram Powertrain Control Module, those can both be VIN specific at times.

The V51 was related to having some codes get set and not able to clear.

I would think if they plug in and don't find any codes set that won't clear they might not do that just because.

He should check his VIN against the recall list.

Never hurts.

He is thinking about flushing the cooler

At the minimum flush it. Maybe cheaper to replace it. Nothing like a cooler full of debris, aka glitter bomb, waiting to immediately take out the next transmission.

Does this have two coolers that need attention: one in the radiator and an external air to oil cooler? Find out.

FWIW The TC is also a place for debris to hide. They need to be rebuilt after a transmission failure to get the debris cleaned out. Don't just reuse the one from the blown transmission unless they want to do the job over shortly with yet another transmission.

He received the new transmission with its TC so not reusing the old one, He's going to flush the cooler(s) and probably install a filter on the return line.

He already has a filter after the TC, before the radiator, the spin-on inside the pan is for that.
There won't be any contamination inside the radiator circuit even after a blow out.

And he needs to insist on the re-learn cycle for the new transmission, that has to be done or he'll end up at the side of the road 15 miles after the dealership. This is a MUST! Absolutely necessary to be accomplished.
