OK, I'm a believer. No matter how you drive the truck, 5th gear will fail at some time. I got 157,767 miles out of mine. I'm curious as to the most miles on a truck before the 5th gear let go. So who holds the record?

Now that I'm a believer that it can happen to my truck too, I'm going to do the KDP fix ASAP so I can sleep at night again.

BTW, my rebuild from Standard Transmission will be installed tomorrow.

Explain for us slushbox types what happens when you loose 5th... .

Does it just rev to the sky when you try it? Or is there all sorts of nifty noise and carnage? When it falls off does it just chill out... or does it increase cost to repair exponentially?

Just curious, as I'm an NV4500/NV5600 fan... . but not a user. :)

Its like having two neutral positions (Three if you count the transfer case). Both times it happened to me I kept driving. The second time I drove it about 1,000 miles after it happened. I figured I was getting another one anyway who cares about metal particles in the transmission.

I don't care what anyone says they will all fail and the 5 speed is the weak link.

I also had a fifth gear sychronizer fail and that time I could not shift out of 5th.

Friend of mine in Idaho has a 96 4X4 2500 that is at 300,000+ something on the original trans... ... runs RP MaxGear 75W90.

I will check what his actual mileage is.

Oo. Oo.

HoleshotHolset: Fortunately, nothing trashes the transmission when you lose fifth. The gear simply falls off the end of the shaft. Don't even have to pull the transmission to fix. Had a friend lose his last week at something over 160,000 miles, a work truck that does a lot of towing.

I got approx 240 K out of mine before it went. The really sad thing was (and usually is I bet) is that I had been talking about fixing it for over 3 months and kept putting it off.

I'm learning... ... ... ... .

About that KDP jig... ..... I hope I get it soon!

Mine went at 145,000 and I drove it for 800 miles before fixing it. When it went I took a BIG magnet and stuck it on the PTO cover to grab metal trash and when we took it apart there was barely any visible metal dust on the cover which tells me it doesnt hurt a lot to drive it for a while. It just kinda slides back on the shaft enough to not engage and does nothing.

That's good to know... . a buddy of mine has a '96 12-valve dump truck with an NV4500... . and I told him about 5th gear and he got a little worried.

I'll just tell him to sweat even more over the KDP... . haha
