I know that alot of BOMBers are running HX40 turbos. I am running EGT's over 1600 with my stock HX35 12 CM and my PE in HOT #3. With my modifications that are listed in my signature, what housing would you recommend with the HX40? I do not want EGT any higher that 1350 max.

Bob,

Wait for more replys, but the veteran HX-40 users, HVAC, Adam, SportBike,& Chris T all run the 16. I remember HVAC saying everybody who tried the 18 didn't like the low end.

I think Joe D runs the 18. Not sure what Piers had.

I will quote HVAC on this..... The only housing to use is the 16.

There is an HX40 16 in my future.

I have run both the 16 and the 18 cm2. The 18 has to much lag at lower RPM's. The 16 feels more like my hx-35 did with the 12 cm2 housing. The 18 is more forgiving at higher boost levels than the 16.

I to have run both housings, the 18 does have more top end but that is the only time its maybe better. We are only talking about 20 hp at the most over a 16 housing at my level, but you give up everything under 1800 to 2000 in normal driving. That is the part I hated, not the all out hp just the low end power. I think in the future twins are going to be the way to go, low end responce as stock with boost to support top end power.

I went for a ride in Piers's truck with the 18 and the bottom end felt strong to me. Strong enough to lite the tires at will.

6BT, I was going to mention that as well. Piers told me the 18. 5 cm2 housing is best suited to a REALLY BUILT 12v whereas the only logical choice for the 24v engines seems to be the 16 cm2 housing. Maybe I read between the lines a little however, I believe this is pretty close.

Big Bob,

The 16 would be fine for where your at now. The difference between the 16 and 18 has more to due with the hp level than if it,s a 12V or a 24V. An auto would also help in spool up.

For all the questions about using a 16cm HX-40 in a twin set up. It,s too small and you would be better off selling it than changing to bigger modified housing.

It is correct that I am running an HX40 turbo, but I got one of the first ones that hit circulation and like Piers' it is an 18. 5cm housing. No problem with the bottom end at all. Bigsaint also has one that he just got at Auto Wurks Diesel. He loves it and he also got the 18. 5.

BOB

I would think that with the fuel you are adding, you'd be better off with the HX40/18cm2
With the 16cm2 on my truck I dropped from 1550+ to 1200

Bob, let's put it this way:

You're a big guy, you drive a big truck, you've got big injectors and a big power box, you're getting a big turbo, what's to stop you from going with the big housing too? #ad

Vaughn

Big Bob, we have installed and tested both turbos, the HX 40 16 does a fine job all around, the 18 has too much lag to run at anything below 2200 RPM.

Something else to consider is to add a BD Plug n Power to your combination, the timing advance will help your EGT problems.

I've been running the 18. 5 and I don't have any lag problems. Anything above 1750 rpms and the boost comes on like a rocket. Right on all the way up to 58 psi in fifth gear. And I have to build boost every time I shift unlike an automatic which just winds up and keeps on blowing. Just can't keep the tires from spinning in any gear.

Chris, I have got my waste gate set at 32 psi on my HX-40, any thing above this and the shafts break. I tried an H2E and the shaft broke on it at 42 psi. What is the secret on how to get 58 psi of boost without breakage?

Kevin Goode, If the shaft would break at anything above 32 psi, mine would have been broken a few weeks ago. I see 40 psi's on a regular basis, Mr. HVAC has proably seen alot more than that (please reply Nowel) and I believe his HX40 was also wastegated at 45 psi's. From what I've read on the TDR, some members are making over 45 psi's on the HX35.

Scott W.

Big Saint, With my HX-35 I could tag 48 psi with no problem. With my first HX-40 I set it at 40 psi, it lasted two weeks before it broke. The next two turbos broke at 34 psi within an hour of installation. Next one Piers broke on their dyno at 42 psi. I know there are alot of people out there getting well over 40 psi, I even tried an H2E, it also broke at 42 psi. Any suggestions on my turbo problems would be appreciated.
