Hi everyone - new to the forum as a member, but browsing it for a month or so now. I am amidst converting my formerly V10 truck to a 12V.

I hadn't realized that there was such a range of pump capacity for the 12 valves until after I already bought my engine (which is a 94 160hp). :{ Am I doomed to low(er) power without a new pump?

Right now I'm planning on 370 injectors, #4 plate, 3K GSK, AFC kit, AFE filter, 4" downpipe to 5" stacks. Maybe a 16cm housing after that & maybe delivery valves. I hope to have it in and running (stock first) in a month or so before I throw in the speed parts...

Anyway, how far will I get without a mega dollar pump rebuild/rework and/or a new turbo (HX40?). For what it's worth, the truck rides on 40" tires, and is mostly a toy & daily (5-7 days/week) driver, and will probably never tow much of anything. Also, I am a mechanic by trade (car & light truck) with some hot-rodding experience, but this is my first diesel. Couldn't resist the smoke, economy, and (reliable) power/dollar.

Thanks for any & all help/suggestions - I'll post pics along the way (have some already).

P. S. - anything you guys would recommend doing/checking while it's out on a stand before I drop it in?

That combo will go quite well with the 160 pump. Of course, the 215 pump is better, but you will be surprised at the performance you can get out of the 160.

Yeah - I don't doubt the 215 is the best choice - I'd like to get into the 400+ hp range, and I just didn't/don't want to spend another $1-2K for a pump after the $4k I spent putting all this stuff (engine, trans, other misc items) together... I'd like to stick to sub $400/mod until I need a bigger turbo.

I forgot to mention above that I'll also be advancing the timing to 15. 5 or 16 - probably when I do the KDP thing - BEFORE I put it in the truck. As far as the timing goes - I don't see a downside to advancing it some (as long as I don't get carried away).

160's work very well when pushed to the extreme. But i would go with the 4K kit on a 160 pump. The 160's and 175's need stiffer springs to rev. On 180 pumps all u need is a 3K kit to rev 3500 rpm. There's no doubt 215's are killer, but 160's will give u a kick in the pants over stock.

I have 1994 2WD 160 pump auto 201,000 miles, it dynoed 453. 5 hp, This is how it is set up, PDR Cam, PDR HX40, 022 Delivery valves from E/P, DB370 from PDR, PDR 3K GSK, #5TST Plate, 4" JDR Exhaust, DTT 89 TC and full Transmission. If you are looking to go over 450 you my want the 215 pump but the 160 is not to bad

Lightman - can you tell me about what you had for power previous to the cam, and/or the HX40 also? In your opinion, should I upgrade the housing on my stock turbo, or just save for an HX 40 - if that's where I know I'm headed eventually?

Last May Madness with PDR HX35-16, 181 D/V DB-370 timing at 15. 5 #5 TST Plate I put down 416 RWHP, If you are going to put in

DB 370 I would put a 16cm housing on your turbo other wise your

EGTS will be high. May Madness 2001 with stock turbo with 16cm housing and 215 injectors, 181D/V, timing the same, plate the same I did 343 RWHP, also 3k GSK on all runs, 4"Ex, K&N in Stock box. Are you going with Auto or Standard Transmission, either way you will need to upgrade the clutch in the standard or the whole auto to stand up to the higher HP numbers,

me too me too!

Am starting to work over a 160. Which plate should I get? I'll be putting a 14 or 16 cm exhaust housing on, into stacks, 370's injectors, timing to 16 or so. 4K GSK. Daily driver and hobby sled puller. Will have built transmission.

Want to build it to the limits of reliability with HX35/16 limitation. Then put a bigger turbo on later and add some more fuel at that time.

The guy that answered my email to TST was not helpful. I gave him details and he gave me canned answers straight out of the catalog.

Go with the 4K springs and it might take a bit more timing on the 160 pump, I had one that I timed 2 weeks ago that I had to go back and put more timing in as it was popping just a tad on the topend.

Call Piers at PDR he will give you the answers, if you are going with the 4K Gov spring kit that is what the # 4 Plate was made for. with 370s you will have to watch your EGTS and also your Transmission will have to be up graded.

It seems like I remember hearing that the 160 pump with 370 injectors doesn't work well without bigger delivery valves. Might want to plan on doing them both at the same time.

Obviously, if you might do a cam, it would be A LOT easier now. :D

I watched a guy with a 160 pump dyno right at 500hp but he spent a lot of time learning how it all worked and prolly had it apart 50 times or more trying different stuff

ATS 40% injectors, d-valves, stock camplate 12. 5* of timing #2 Only... . 431 @ PDR Dyno Day... . I would say the 160 pumps do just fine.

More 160 stuff

I called JoeD and he doesn't like DV changes. But then most of his experience it with 215 pumps. Spect I need to call Piers.

So I found a #4 plate locally (he went to a ZERO), now I'm in line for his 191 DV's when he goes to Cut DV's.

JD is more conservative on the injector side too. Steering me toward some 215's or "6-holers".

Wud about that. Save the 370's until I put turbo/stacks on?

16cm housing is going to be first turbo upgrade.

The 160 are fine but need bigger DV's if you want to get the most out of them, they like more timing than the bigger pumps from what I've seen. There is a world of difference between the 160's and the 215's, like the difference between my pump and a stock one.
