Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 1693 code question and hesitation

Well, the CEL came on Friday and when I drove the truck yesterday, it hesitated and acted like it was going to stop running. Checked the codes and it threw a 1693, which is "DTC Detected in Companion Mdiule" and "DTC detected in PCM/ECM or DTC detected in ECM" Any hints on what this could be? Is renting a scan tool the only way to determine exactly what's the problem? Good fuel pressure, so I know that's not it. The IP has only about 28K on it. I hope that hasn't gone out again.

You can buy a good scan tool for less than $100 at WalMart, and it may be helpful in locating the DTC which triggered the P1693.

Got the scan tool form autozone and pulled a 1689. "No Communication between ECM and Injection pump module" which mean Data link circuit failure between ECM and fuel injection Pump. Low power, engine derated, or engine stops.

Which is exactly what mine does some of the time. It may run normal and then start hesitating or just dieing. Where to from here? Is it the pump again?

I'll be a little upset if it is.
