16cm housing

I'm not quite ready to do any serious bombing yet ($$$ #ad
) but I'm wondering how much of a difference a 16cm housing will make? The truck is completely stock right now.

I had a 16cm turbo housing on my truck for a breif time, but it just wasn't enough for me. If you are really considering a turbo housing... I'd go with a 12 or a 14. I currently have a 12 on my truck and love it. Really wakes the truck up at the bottom end and I love the whistle! There just wasn't that much of a noticable difference to me with the 16.

I also didn't erally notice a big difference going to the 16 cm2 Turbo. But I only had the 18. 5 cm2 to begin with. I thought I had the 21 cm2 until I took it off. Then since it was off, might as well put on the 16 cm2. I do think it does spool up a little faster but didn't notice any timing difference in my 0 - 60 times that I tested. Still at 12 seconds flat for that time. I don't know if that is good or not but it is for me since it was 0 - 60 in 16 seconds before my pump adjustments.

Terry,

The 16cm2 housings are the best performance per dollar. You can go with the 12cm2 or 14cm2 housings ,but you will have to watch the EGTs very closely! It is the only housing I will install on a first gen. truck with no gauges! Also you may not be able to get the full benifit of fueling the pump or after market injectors if you can not open it up due to high EGTs. The 12 & 14s are $100 more to purchase, which does NOT include the adapter plate to install on the wastegate to connect to the down pipe plus the down pipe needs to be modified to use in a first gen. truck. Then you will need to route boost pressure to the wastegate of the exhaust housing. Be clear that none of this is very difficult, but unnecessary when literally just bolting a 16 housing on you turbo. As stated above the 16s do not make that much difference when going from a 18. 5cm2 housing, but they really come alive when the fuel is turned up and after market injectors are added.

The bonus is it breathes better. Especially if you plan on keeping some sort of muffler on the exhaust. I do not recommend a stock muffler. The best IS straight piped, but I have had customers back several times for a muffler install after they have hooked up the fiver to the truck that amplifies the noise. Do a search on Walker Mufflers on this web site and you will have all the info you need on them.

Just curious, but how can I tell what size of turbo housing I have on my truck? As far as I know the turbo is stock. I can see nothing that even resembles a wastegate. Thanks for the help

I too changed my housing to a 16cm. And like previously stated because I already had an 18. 5cm housing the change was a bit subtle for me. It does spool up quick though and I get another couple PSI at most. The 91's had a bigger housing than mine I think it was 21cm. In this case you will see a difference.
You will find the number cast right on the large 'compressor wheel' portion of the existing housing, at the top facing the rad, I think. Thats were mine was anyway.

Jeremy, for the 92 if your housing is stock then it will be the 21. I replaced my 21 with a 16 and there is a noticeable difference in the spool-up. On the 92 one can not easily see any identifying numbers. The numbers are located on the side of the housing right under where the exhaust pipe hooks up to the turbo housing. Unless you can get your head down there, you should be able to see it if you use a mirror.
By the way Stabco Repower is a good place to get yourself a housing, good price and good service.

If anyone is considering a 12cm housing, but doesn't want to modify their exhaust... . contact me through this post or by email. I can get 12cm "non wastegated" for a reasonable price. It is a simple bolt on... just like the 16. I really haven't noticed any kind of egt increases with my 12, and I don't think the 16 is enough on our 1st gens.

I recently installed a 14 cm turbo housing on my 93 D350, I had to shorten the front engine pipe 1 inch to clear the heater box area, also added a line for the wastegate from the intake manifold where the boost gauge tee mounts. Turbo boost is now higher,I have hit 15 psi with no load. PW injectors and pump check next. The truck is more responsive on the lower end, now I can hear the turbo working. Happy Holidays. Rick.

Rick, I was at 15 before the PW injectors. I'm now at 26, still want to do the housing and tweak the pump. I think you need to get a bigger exhaust system.

Paccool, You are right about replacing my stock 93D350 exhaust system, any suggestions for a 2WD extended cab dually,I have not found a vendor that sells a 3 1/2 or 4 inch exhaust for this truck, all for 4 wheel drives or second generation trucks. Thanks Rick.

Banks makes one but that is a lot of money! Why don't you try a post in the product section and see what info you get back.

Rick,
Give Ted Jannetty a call about the exhausts. He gave me a great deal on a 3" mandrel bent exhaust for a lot less than others wanted for their 3 1/2". From another members dyno testing, there is no difference from these two sizes up to 350 hp.

Thanks for the exhaust system information,I will look into them after the 14" of white stuff disappears. Rick.
