alright, i opened up the back of my pump today so i could attempt to bend the rod back on the bad side of the governor. see my original post- https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=72822&highlight=governor+problems the governor rod where the springs go around bent out of nowhere to where the idle stuck itself at 1500 and then 1700rpms.

anyways, i fished around in the bottom of the pump with a magnet and found 3 pieces:

1 washer

1 thin nut

1 screw. the screw is threaded the whole way around with flat spots on the side (kinda of like how the rod where the governor springs goes around has flat spots on it). it also has a cut in the top of it for a flathead screwdriver- so it's some kinda of adjusting screw. the threads on the screw and washer aren't necessarily stripped, but they definately aren't right.

anyone know where these pieces came from (i imagine in the governor) and what they do/did?

i will do my best to get pictures posted up this weekend.

Rammer, it's the stud, nut and washer that go in the back of the pump to adjust the rocker arm were it hits the plate. The stud has a screw driver slot on the end to make the adjustment then the nut and washer jam it in place and hold it. I have dropped these in the pump before going out too far. Look on Piers's web site at teh rocker adjustment pic for the location of it... ... lower center and at an angle.

jim, great, then i have to tuck my tail between my legs if that's what caused it. i did do the arm adjustment so it would ride along the plate. i betya i didn't tighten it down enough so it fell off and got chewed up in the governor springs. now that i took a closer look at the screw, it got chewed up. it must have ridden along that one set of governor springs until it bent the rod. i bent the rod back some, but it'll probably wind up breaking off if i keep playing with it too much.

*stupid, stupid* i could only do it by feel and looking down into the afc with the fuel filter removed. oh well i guess!

the pictures of close up of the parts came out blurry... i'll see what i can do about getting better ones. i do have some more of the pump itself and one that you can kinda of see the bent rod (a tad blurry).

well, at least i learn from my mistakes:eek: :{

rammer

I tried the arm adjustment on mine about 4 times now. I cant even get the damn screws on the cover loose, so dont feel bad. Man are those suckers tight.

Heck, a simple bolt on the lower control arm has been kickin my butt for two days now, and to think I am going to do a transmission swap this weekend.

HC, they were a pain to loosen. there was a thin metal rod that connected to each bolt which made it even harder. and i HAD to take out the fuel filter. . there was no way around that. maybe you should try using a short stubby flathead and squeeze a set of big vise grips onto it to help to turn the screws. (unless you don't have flathead screws- i have weird breakaway screws on the back of my marine pump).

Matt, do you see Deo a lot? it looks like he wants the pump, but it's not 100%. i opened up the back cover, but i haven't opened it up anywhere in the plunger/barrels section though.

I can't even get the dang screws on the cover loose Vise grips work best the first time, after that use a 90 degree screw driver tool.

Rammer Don't sweat it too much, I have forgotten to tighten that nut before and had to take the cover back off!

Jim

hey tom matt and i kinda get to gethere often ha either way with the pump matt will be helping me with it if i get get it etc as my p pump is a 8. 3L and i have much more expereince with the ve pumps so matt's my "p pump" go to guy any how ha... we both help each other out on our own projects. . let me know email or private message or phone etc

thanks Deo

\x/ hillfolk!

well, i'm leaving sunday the 22nd to head over to wyoming so if you me to stop over at matt's or deo's on the way over to deliver the pump, then i can. i either have to go through NY or Mass/CT to reach I80 so no big deal. if not, just send it through the mail, whatever you want.

mty- yeah, no sand drags this year:{

deo, you can give me a call if you need to. leave a message or whatever.

Tom

Tom: Are they still having the sand drags?

I hope you guys can connect before it's time for Tom to go to WyoTech..... let me know if I can help with moving the pump around or whatever.

Matt

i could stop by either's houses and drop it off (matt-didn't know if you'll be seeing deo soon or not). or i can just do it by mail. i'm leaving the 22nd or maybe the 23rd.

i'm not sure about the sand drags. did you guys get wheel hop? i get nasty wheel hop on snow and would wonder if i would in the sand. plus overrevving it-floating valves- with the stock converter would kind of scare me.

btw, i just took a bunch more pictures that are hopefully more clear- will get them developed today and posted up tomorrow night.

Tom

Tom: Two words --> digital camera! :D

If you want, let me know when you'll be in my area - and I'll meet up with you.

This is the better choice --> Since Deo lives so close to 84 - he might be better suited to meet up with you.

As for the wheelhop - nothing that a little set of traction bars won't solve. I remember BSoldie having a TON of wheel hop last year... . and John Dishong's truck broke an output shaft at the starting line - so his wheel hop was kept to a minimum. :-laf

Matt

John did make a nice show... . at the start line. lots a smoke, but no go.

i remember that pigpen said it was better to keep on the throttle and plow through the sand...

here are some pictures:pump pictures

in picture9 you can see how the rod that the springs/retainers go around is definately not in the center of the hole.

picture11 is of the pieces that i found in the bottom of the pump- obviously they're missing from the arm inside the pump.

for Deo/MTY- picture 12 & 13 show where either brakcets have been removed or changed/switched.

learn from my mistake!

i could take out that rack stop;) but there is a point where it becomes too much fuel and kills power in the area of 1400-1800rpms. i can spin the tires much easier with very little smoke than with a huge cloud. we'll see, i play with the thing every other day it seemsOo.

If Deo can make it down on saturday, i'll obviously be bringing the pump so that everyone can see the damage. and yeah, i was only usuing a crappy throw-away camera:eek:

People talk about taking the plate out so here is some info for you, I made 3 passes Friday night before I blew the pushrod cover gasket again, first pass was at what I believe to be max rack travel for my pump and it netted me 110 MPH, second was with a different plate grind in the same spot... again 110, then I slid it 3/4 forward and only got 108, last two passes were within an hour of each other and crossing the line I was almost 100 degrees colder on EGT's on the 108 pass, more is not better... . this is a hard thing to get a guy to understand:D
