I have an investment sort of question. I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for when I did a search, so here goes. I have an '04 dually, and the crappy GSA's keep splitting and cracking. I went to rotate them, but ended up buying a used tire as I found another one is splitting, and two more have serious cracks. These tires are JUNK!!! I am contemplating Coopers or Firestones if I just replace the tires.

You who have used the Coopers or Firestones on a 4x4, what sort of mileage did you get out of them?

My other question is for 19. 5 inch tires/wheels. I'm thinking steel wheels and 245/70/19. 5 tires. What sort of mileage can I get out of these? Can I expect to see over 100K on a set? I'm wondering if it's worth it to upgrade, or if I should just get new tires and be done (for another 2. 5 years).

Well, this may be a bit early for projecting tire life but I have just over 700 miles on a new set of Hankook DH01's in 265-70-19. 5 and the little nubbins that are on all new tires are still on the faces of the tread blocks where they contact the road. If that's any indication, I'd say they're gonna wear pretty good! And, I can't see a Load Range G tire being stressed in the sidewalls by a pickup unless I was to run them flat or at least seriously under inflated. I think they're good for 5070 lbs per tire if aired to max pressure (110 psi) which is about double the GVW of the truck so any splitting would be a real surprise to say the least.

I've been running 19. 5 khumo's for about 8,000 miles now and they don't appear to have worn at all (except the little nubbies are gone :-laf ). I went with aluminum rims (4) and 2(steel) to cut down on rotating mass, wish I could have gotten all 6 aluminum but I'm still happy.

I have 39,000 on my Toyo M-608Z they started with 28/32 tread depth. They currently have 4/32 tread left. those are the facts you guys decide if you think you get more mileage. The truck weighs 9100 lbs daily. 20,000 when I tow the John Deere. Aprox 200 miles per month towing.

I installed 19. 5 about 2000 miles ago with Michelin XVX, the dealer Syped them for $10. 00 a tire. They said well over 100,000 miles with tahat tire.

I used to get my tires siped on the 97 dodge. They would last about 35 - 40 thousand miles. When I put the 19. 5's on the 03 at Les Schwab I was reccommended not to have any siping done. The reasoning for this advise was I was planning an Alaska trip. I was thinking of taking the gravel hwy though BC. I was told that siping is good for lighter vehicles traveling mosly on pavement. I wonder if the big rigs have siped tires. Similar PSI on tread. I am looking at tires now I am not sure what I will buy this time. Probably a different brand just to see if I get better tread life.

I had my 19. 5's siped at Schwab. However, when they did it, they recommended siping only the center lugs and leaving the shoulders untouched. They said that other customers that had fully siped their 19. 5's complained of the tread feeling "squishey" (their word) when driving whereas the ones that only siped the centers had no complaints at all. Supposedly, they enjoyed the improved traction from all the edges but no squishey feeling. Thats how we did mine and they aren't squishey at all. In fact, you can't even see the sipes on the steers while the drives have picked up some sand in the sipes and have spread slightly, so they now show. As far as big rigs having siped tires, many do. Supposedly better traction on slick roads and cooler running from easier flexing. As far as off road truck tires such as are used on mine haul rigs, dump trucks or loggers, most have what are called hard rock lugs w/o siping so they won't pick up crushed rock "arrowheads" in the sipes and rock drill the casings.

TAbbott, good post I will consider the center sipe option this time around. I still dont buy the long mileage claims. This is based on my experience.

Hello Soler

I have19. 5 on my 04 and love them yokohoma ty303 285/70-19. 5 and alcoa wheels all 6 with centermatic rings 35 inch tall and they rub just a little when turning thru a dip, rpms came down from 2200 at 80 to 1850 at 80

runing at 70 mph it is 1750 and 65 is running 1650 as best as I can tell

you will lose a little around town takes a lot to get them up and running down the highway you will gain a little MPG. the size your thinking about should be about the same I went with bigger tires just for the fun of it and it looks cool.

they should come with 19. 5's

heres a pic

tires

i put them on july 2 of this year

i have about 5000 miles on them

there a little wierd at first to drive love to follow the ruts in the road as soon as you knock the edges of then they drive great syipe them for winter time roads and for cooling in the summer

there are more pic's of them in the dse in truck 04/05 on this web site

thats ok sir

the dse is a product that you can use to burn vegoil in your truck as a fuel

its just one part of 4 that you mix with the oil i have been running it for a little over a year and about 12000 miles. and have had no problems with it yet , the oil is used oil from the cafe's its a dirty job getting the oil but i can make fuel for 56 cents a gallon

if you read that thread there is a lot of info in there and a few people that have changed there minds about blending fuel its not biodiesel but i think of it as a easier way of making your own fuel

the 04 you have is the same truck i have only you have a 6 speed and i have an auto

if you have the time its a good read ( dse in truck 04-05 CTD) thats the thread

thanks for asking

Gotcha, cj. I've been looking at the thread "bio diesel contraption" I just didn't know what "dse" meant. Thanks. I'll take a look at that thread, too.

the bio diesel people will tell you that the dse will not work also the svo two tank people will tell you the same and there is a little oil co and govt bashing in that post most of it started by myself. I just feel some times they dont tell us what is really going on.
