Cummins 8.3 questions

I looked a an 1998 F-750 today with a 12 valve Cummins in it.

The plate on the side of it said 190 HP.

It only has 69,900 miles on it and it has a 6 speed trans. full air system / breaks and a hydraulic PTO system and a 5th wheel 22. 5 Alcoa wheels all around a big sleeper and tilt front end. I am looking for a bigger truck to pull cars with and the price is right.

Any info on this 190hp 12 valve?

Cliff,

The 190 B's are good engines, and can be hopped-up similar to the 12v's in the first run of the new body style rams. I would seriously consider looking hard underneath the hood before purchasing that truck. No offense to Ford owners, but their trucks are designed to be absolute animals to work on, bar-none, period, I rest my case  Honestly, just look, you'll see. If you don't plan to work on it then you might not care, on the other hand, if it does quit, and you can't afford down time... . you get the idea. Not that Freightliners are anywhere near my favorites to work on, they are almost lightyears better then the Fords. Both of these trucks have cheap interiors, Ford does have the upperhand in the late models however.

For the engine, just look for the normal stuff: Air brake compressor, check to make sure that the support bracket is still on the back of it, if it is broken or has fallen off, you may be on your way to a cracked gear housing. Look real good around the block top and bottom for antifreeze stains for possiable head gasket failure. Try to look over the gear housing area real good for the front crank seal, accesory drive seal, and front cover leaks. These engines will last a long time when maintained well, the 190's will not feel like your "stacked" 24v, but they are "turn-up-able" :D

Good Luck,

Russell

Thanks Russell this is just what I was looking for. On my first inspection of this truck I did not see any thing that looked like a leak. and the the oil fill area was clean and the filter was clean with an spare filter in the truck only bad thing was the filters were Fram's

Thanks again for the input
