Who is incorrect..The Ford dealer or me? (sorry long)

Wow, Yesterday I purchased a 1976 300D Mercedes-Benz, what a nice car! The car has a high idle control mounted on the dash from the factory! lol Ours do not even come that way factory now a days and we have to get them enabeled. These cars rule and boy does that low compression sure sound sweet, boy o boy the days of the old style diesels, too bad I am too young to ever see them when they were new, but for a 3600lb car dry they get 20-35 mpg speed based! Now imagine if our trucks were built to the same quality as these cars!

Well, you got a lucky find! Those cars are tanks, engines solid but do like to "mark thier territory. " Check out MB World. Be sure to check out the new diesel specific forum.

Check out where the upper control arm mounts into the fender in the Rear of the arm. Is there still any metal there? Check under the floor and trunk, can you poke your finger through the metal? :) I have seen a couple of them with a few "problems".

I drove a 1981 300D auto. for over 10 years. Very nice driving car. That is until the timing chain broke.

Was a little rusty though.

If your model has the electric water pump for the heater better keep a rebuild kit on hand for the automatic flow valve.

Mine would not start if 1 glow plug burnt out. Did average 28 mpg.

The manual was my life saver.

I would buy another 5 cylinder diesel if it had < 150 K miles and a turbo.

that older car doesn't have that miserable pos ac/heater servo that the 77-81 300s had, $550 every 5 years sucks

There is a little rust on the car 1 spot on each fender which should be easily ground out and the front floor boards both have a rusted spot on each the size of a half dollar undetr the carpet but nothing to big, and yea no rust under the hood and it looks like it was undercoated from the factory which I believe is the life saver for this car. Damn is it smooth though, and no trunk rust.

It's a great car, as long as you don't have to breathe anywhere close to the exhaust.....

They were nasty, nasty. But long-lived, long-lived.
